RAKAIA: 1899 – Episode J "Go well back down the tracks."

On Saturday the 11th of March 1899 two Picnic Trains organised by the Islington Freezing Works in Christchurch traveled to Ashburton. On the way back the second train collided with the first at a sleepy mid-Canterbury town called Rakaia.

In today’s episode I take a look at the steps that those on duty at Rakaia took, forlornly, to protect the rear of the first picnic train as it stood at Rakaia’s platform…

Thanks to the Plains Railway and Historical Museum for their hospitality.
