las Vegas Raiders fans got what they wanted with rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell getting the start in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the dynamic debut that many were hoping for as the Raiders lost 24-17.
O’Connell had three turnovers, including an interception when Las Vegas was in a position to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Though it was his first start, head coach Josh McDaniels wants to see the quarterback do a better job of protecting the ball.
“He’ll be the first one to understand that there are things that he could do better,” McDaniels said in his October 1 postgame press conference. “Playing quarterback in our league starts with taking care of the football. … I thought he adapted to the game a little bit as it went on, and we’ll take every opportunity to learn from the mistakes that we made as a team, and I’m sure he will also as a quarterback and try to get better from it.”
O’Connell was playing in relief of Jimmy Garoppolo, who was ruled out due to a concussion. The Raiders decided to start the rookie over 15-year veteran Brian Hoyer. He finished with 238 passing yards, a rushing touchdown, an interception and two fumbles lost.
Aidan O’Connell Talks Late-Game Interception
The Raiders had a rough start to the game and were down 24-7 at halftime. The defense shut out the Chargers in the second half and the team was able to get the score within seven. They were able to drive down to the Chargers’ goalline when Aidan O’Connell threw an interception to Asante Samuel Jr. on first down.
The Raiders never got the ball back and lost. O’Connell discussed what he saw on the final play that led him to throw it.
“It was a look I saw in practice and coach did a good job of preparing me I just got to do a better job of executing,” O’Connell said in his October 1 postgame press conference.
The Raiders had plenty of time to try and run the ball with running back Josh Jacobs but decided to put the game in O’Connell’s hands. It turned out the rookie quarterback wasn’t quite ready yet.
Raiders’ Davante Adams on Shoulder Injury: ‘Definitely Does Not Feel Good Right Now’
Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams temporarily exited Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers with a shoulder injury but returned to finish the contest.
He told reporters it “definitely does not feel good right now” after the game.
Adams, who has been mostly healthy over his 10-year career, missed some time during training camp with a minor right leg injury after getting hit by San Francisco 49ers linebacker Oren Burks in joint practices.
INGLEWOOD, Calif — — With their $252.5 million quarterback wearing a splint on his non-throwing hand and down three starters on defense, the Los Angeles Chargers found a way to gut out their second straight win.
The Chargers had a 17-point halftime lead, but needed a late stop on defense and a clutch throw from Justin Herbert in the final three minutes to pull out a 24-17 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.
“It was a really tough performance with a bunch of guys out,” coach Brandon Staley said. “Our guys had their best at the end.”
Khalil Mack set a franchise single-game record with six sacks and Herbert accounted for three touchdowns in the first half.
Herbert got the middle finger in his left hand caught in the helmet of a Raiders player after being intercepted by Tre’von Moehrig. He wore a split on the hand during the fourth quarter.

Louis Riddick would bring credibility to the nation he's a Raider with a corporate C.E.O. mentality will hold players and coaches accountable plain and simple he's and he analytical
SINCE JOSH MCDANIELS BECAME THE RAIDERS HEAD COACH HE TORE UP THE RAIDERS TEAM THAT MADE THE NFL PLAYOFFS THE YEAR BEFORE HE BECAME THE RAIDERS HEAD COACH & THE RAIDERS HAVE SUFFERED 11 CLOSE LOSSES BY ONLY A TOUCHDOWN OR LESS!!! THAT'S BECAUSE JOSH MCDANIELS GETS OUT COACHED ON A REGULAR BASIS. JOSH MCDANIELS SHOULD BUILD HIS OFFENSE AROUND THE STRENGTHS OF OUR PLAYERS. MCDANIELS SHOULD JUST ASK ALL OF OUR WIDE RECEIVERS & TIGHT ENDS & RUNNING BACKS WHAT THERE FAVORITE ROUTES ARE & THEN THE PLAYERS MUST RUN THERE FAVORITE ROUTES IN THE GAME.
OWNER MARK DAVIS NEEDS TO SELL THE RAIDERS TO SOMEBODY THAT CARES & LOVES THE NATION!!! RAIDERS NATION 4 LIFE!!! OAKLAND CHAPTER EST. 1960 LOS ANGELES CHAPTER EST. 1982 LAS VEGAS CHAPTER EST. 2020
could McDaniels be throwing these games with playcalls? Kicking feild goal when you need a touchdown and now running a man passing play against a zone in the readzone and we all know we should have run it 3 times. "Just Sayin" …. think about it
davante adams come to niners in trade raiders are done
davante come to niners we get lombardi
Fire everybody!!!!!!
You guys on these shows were all worried about firing and getting rid Derek carr. Knowing Derek carr always starts slow with a new coach. I knew from mcclowns past Denver days he was a horrible coach. You guys didn't listen. He single handed lost 5 games last year with his play calls and got lucky against the patriots. He sucks. He's always gonna suck. Belicheat and brady listened to him and ran his plays half the time to the point he was always in arguments with them. Patriot way gotta go. The garbage way only worked with Tom Brady. Its garbage.
Bill Belichick – the greatest HC of all time? I think we really have to question this now – Bill Belichick has a LOSING RECORD when Tom Brady isn't his QB.
Think about it – not just no SuperBowls, but an actual losing record… just like every other "Patriot-way" coach that's gone anywhere else. The "Patriot-way" is a lie, and all these coaches are frauds that believe their own lie. Tom Brady is the only constant – he dragged all these rosters full of average players, and all these mediocre coaches to un-dreamed of success, and reputations they clearly don 't deserve.
Huge NO on Bienemy!
Everyone in the NFL needs to wake up to this being a totally unbalanced, QB-driven sport – look at any successful coach, and then look at his QB and decide if the QB is the reason not the coach.
We need to find a coach that can win games WITHOUT an elite QB, then we need to find him an elite QB and win all the SuperBowls!
Wasted, I don’t like what Jmd has done thus far, but I truly believe Mark is tired of paying two and three coaches at the same time. I have a feeling Jmd is gonna do his four years. Let’s hope he can improve his decision making because he may be here awhile longer! Enjoyed the content.
…..another quick aside. We as a fan base sound really ignorant calling this man names. Let’s show some class and maybe we may be taken seriously by the brass. We can hate the direction this team is going without all the name calling imo. It makes us look petulant. The Smitty word of the day! 😂 Peace to you king!
I miss the erie intro 😢
Nothing changing I'm used to the ignorance Al started running this franchise in dirt early 2000s an jr finishing 41 years a fan i can't anymore
After Tom Flores, same old story, the coach is no good, or the quarterback or the defense 40 years of the same old thing
Wasted. Change the scheme and try something different. And maybe we will still have a fighting chance
I've been a raider fan for 42 years. This organization and team sucks and will never be good.
I've been a raider fan a very long time. And I can't take that excuse that the refs are losing the game's forest. The raiders is just a trash team
He doesn’t have the money , he will have to still pay him McDaniel’s
The misery comes when you realize there’s more years after this. I saw it last year, you don’t give coaches 10 and 5 year contracts on their first contract. Now the bed is made and we are laying in it. I’m just happy I have company now lol. Mark is stuck with McDaniels and we are too. Makes me sick. RN4L 🏴☠️☠️🏴☠️
Sorry I missed the stream Wasted.
I've always had questions about McDaniels but I gave him the benefit of the doubt for you and the Raiders' Nation. Cowboys' fans have seen average/below average coaching and seen it not too long ago. The Jason Garrett Era is a great example of that. McDaniels is in that same vein.
There is a way to instill discipline without pissing off the players and making the team worse. McCarthy has done that for the Cowboys. The Raiders need to find that coach for them. They are also going to have to rebuild the organization from the Scouting Department up. Mark Davis is going to have to hire a President of Football to rebuild the Raiders Organization. Then Mark can stick to the business aspect and being the owner.
NO NEED TO WIN …THIS TEAM IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE..DRAFTING CALEB WILLIAMS IS ALL I WANT NOW🙏👍
My 9 year old son's first game. He was so angry that he wanted to rip his chain. In true raider fashion😅. But in the end I explained to him to relax and just breathe. He is tired of losing already as just a 5 year fan😅
All these arrogant New England coaches from the Belichek tree are NOTHING without Brady. The faster they accept this fact, the better off they will be.
Even Belichek himself SUCKS without Brady.
Until our owner can get a real hairstyle that doesn’t look like a satellite dish I can’t trust him to make the right hires 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
