“It’s not the years, honey. It’s the mileage.”
Raiders of the Lost Ark is an unimpeachably great movie that gave us the second iconic Harrison Ford role of the era with Indiana Jones. It’s hard to imagine a world without our most famous archeologist, or to understate the franchise’s influence on the adventure genre, but at the time there was a weird amount of pressure to succeed. Steven Spielberg was coming off a string of movies that had gone over budget, the most recent of which was an outright flop. Clint, Cal and Alex dig into the budget-minded approach Spielberg, George Lucas and crew took to the production, the incredible accidents responsible for some of the coolest imagery in the film and just how many people were violently ill during production. So buckle up, this is almost 2 hours worth of Raiders talk to find out where it ranks on the CineFix Top 100!
Meanwhile, somebody took the lid off of producer Dan’s algorithm so keep your eyes shut. No matter what happens, don’t look at it. JUST KEEP YOUR EYES SHUT, MARION!

I love CineFix but I absolutely hate this list. IGN should have had a subscriber based poll wiGth CineFix employees getting double weighted votes and additional weight to mentions on CineFix to compile the results. This 4 person favorites and a mysterious algorithm might feel cool but it makes a once fun trip into cinema feel more like wasted time. AND on top of that these 90 minute podcasts are faaaarrr too long!!! Do the poll then do a 1 hour pod for each 10 of 100-11 and an hour for each of the top 10. CineFix used to be interesting!!!! Good idea, poor execution.
With this being the end to your first season of this, I just wanted to thank you all for this whole series. This has been a great way to learn more about movies I already love and find out more about movies I need to watch. Can't wait for the next season! My one suggestion for a movie list that Raiders should be on is a Top 10 Movie McGuffins – though I guess it might be a cross of McGuffin for most of the movie until it becomes a "Big Dumb Object" by the end.
Dredful listing. That should have been top 10, well done Clint
Toht's the safe choice, Belloq is swinging for the fences, if it works it works better but much more likely to fail.
This conversation is making me realize something about the IJ character. All the beats and musical notes identifying the very real dangers around him in the present is bc he's so unaware. It's to note to the audience that he's not aware so you have to be made aware that there's more danger present.
He's ironically flawed. He dives into the past and fully aware of the numerous dangers placed by people to protect their culture. Yet, he's hilariously unaware of how at risk his life is on the way and after grave robbing. Which is why he keeps losing to his competitor.
Just a thought 🤷🏽
Right🙄
Could you imagine the Ark opening scene with Cage as Belloq, though? Worth the price of admission, in my imo.
Haven't been following this series as closely. Glad you're talking about one of Indie films but sure wish this Cinefix Top 100 would wrap up already, I want to see the final episode where you list all your picks.
Surprised no one did a brief mention about Harrison Ford stapling his hat to his forehead.
wait a second…Porkins is in Raiders AND he is Eckhart in Batman!!!! Wow, that actor got some good movies!
Nic Cage could have been the Nazi colonel.
That wasn’t Toht. That was VFX supervisor Dennis Muren.
INDIANA JONES SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE ARK (my observation)
In Egypt, Indy and Sallah are in Egypt having the headpiece inscription translated by a man called Imam.
IMAM: This is a warning not to disturb the Ark of the Covenant.
INDY: What about the height of the staff, though? Did Belloq get it off of here?
IMAM: Yes. It is here. This were the old way, this mean six kadam high.
SALLAH: About 72 inches.
IMAM: Wait! (Imam turns headpiece over) ''And take back one kadam to honor the Hebrew God whose Ark this is.''
INDY: You said their headpiece only had markings on one side. Are you absolutely sure?
(Sallah nods)
INDY: Belloq's staff is too long. They're digging in the wrong place.
As Sallah stated, "six kadam high" is about 72 inches, which equates to six feet—making 1 kadam equal to 1 foot. Taking back 1 kadam would make the height of the staff 5-feet-tall. Indy/Harrison Ford is about six-feet-tall, yet in the map room, the staff which should only be 5-feet-tall is at least an entire foot taller than Indy. The length of dowel to make the staff appears to be cut too long, and this would actually make Indy's staff around 1 kadam/foot longer than Belloq's staff.
It was Indy's staff that was too long, yet he was digging in the right place.
Clint's daughter was excited to watch Raiders mostly because it was a break from all of the Tarkovsky viewings.
I had the scene at 1:04:06 enlarged to 2ft x 5ft on a canvas and it hangs in my movie room.
Also the scene in the map room would only work 2 times a year. Probably on a solstice.
Speaking of Nepalese drinking games, take a shot every time someone in this video says "to your point"
Pleeeease come back soon
Is the list being posted somewhere? Would love to see it filling in as you go. Really enjoying this series!
What does Torf mean?
43:15 Toht is not on the plane with him. Bad guy, yes. Toht, no.
