RAF's new cutting-edge E-7 Wedgetail completes maiden test flight

The Royal Air Forceโ€™s cutting-edge Wedgetail E7 AEW Mk1 aircraft has hit an important milestone, taking its maiden test flight from Birmingham Airport.

The Wedgetail, which has not even been fully painted yet, will operate from RAF Lossiemouth.

The airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft will provide eyes in the sky for at least the next 20 years.

  1. Insane that the original order was for five Wedgetails, but they only ended up ordering three, for the cost of the original five. Now, if one is deployed, or goes down for maintenance or worse, there won't be enough to patrol UK skies.

  2. Insane that UK bought five sets of RADAR but only 3 aircraft to put them in. Fortunately 737 is cheap

RC135W Rivet Joint ISTAR Airseeker has only three aircraft so are also not enough.

The first responsibility of the nation state is for Defence so shame on all politicians who have neglected this.

  3. I find it hilarious that in development America decided their battle management control plane was better (even though it performed worse on all tests) and now all most of the western world wants these Australian planes including America.
