Queen Elizabeth dies: Newly elected PM Liz Truss leads MP speech tributes

Queen Elizabeth dies: Newly elected PM Liz Truss leads MP tributes: The death of the Queen has triggered contingency plans known as Operation Unicorn. Part of the long-held so-called London Bridge arrangements for the aftermath of Elizabeth’s death, Unicorn sets in motion additional ceremonial events in Edinburgh.
Liz Truss, the Prime Minister, hailed the late monarch for creating modern Britain as she launched a special session of the Commons. MPs and peers will spend two days paying tribute to the Queen, following her death yesterday at the age of 96. Ms Truss will also hold her first official audience with King Charles this afternoon after he returns to London from Scotland. Ms Truss’s meeting with the Queen at Balmoral on Tuesday, where she was officially appointed PM, was her last face-to-face political action before her 70-year reign came to an end. The Prime Minister spoke to the new monarch by phone yesterday. Parliament has swept aside its business for today and normal politics is largely on hold for the 10-day mourning period.

  1. R.I.P her majesty Queen and you will be missed, my oath of allegiance sadly died with her which I swore to protect her majesty when I joined the army in 1980, I don't trust Charles or respect him or any other members of the Royal family I will never support them they will have to earn any respect from me which I doubt they ever will.

  2. She loved her people and her country that much she only started paying tax on her huge wealth thirty years ago it's time Britain declared itself a Republic and rid ourselves of this shower of perverts and parasites that like to Lord it over the rest of us.

  3. M/S Liz Truss has done very well after only 3 days in office. She kissed the Queen's hand on Tuesday , but never expected that 2 days later ,she would have to make a speech about the Queen, lead the nation's tribute to her Majesty, and speak and read the lesson in St. Paul's Cathedral. I did not vote for you, but I am impressed.

  4. A speaker and prime minister who can read a speech with confidence and fluidity would help? in such a serious time? Whatever happened to speaking from the heart? Serious competent professionals who are there to make a difference, and not self servers, would have had the confidence to do so?

  5. The prime Minister speech was cold and it sounded like she didn’t mean one word of it.where others in parliament both sides labour and conservatives gave heartfelt messages about the Queen and Charles now king, how this woman got in as prime Minister she wanted to abolish the Queen and the monarchy I have no respect or no trust in this woman at all my heart goes out to the royal family and those that loved majesty it’s very very sad day and time for everybody because she was the light in the darkness her light shone really bright light but went out when her majesty died, but she’s with her beloved husband Philip , but she will never be forgotten as she will never stop being loved😒😒

  6. She has the most dreadfully Janet and John delivery, not exactly box office. Boris’ speech was orders of magnitude better, although he probably wrote it 2 years ago. Can’t imagine how Truss is coping with all this in her first week.

  7. Thank you Britain for developing Hong Kong despite the rough start. Many people are grateful to the UK and the Brits, and mourn for the loss of your Queen. May her Majesty rest in peace and enjoy time with her beloved Prince Philip.

  10. I find it still hard to believe the Queen is dead. I think it is because we saw her majesty on Tuesday greeting the new Prime minster and within 48 hours her majesty died. I don't think any words can express the loss we all feel. If only politicians could abide and learn from Her Majesty about confidentiality and people matter and honesty. As a little note as well I do not appreciate the adverts been slotted into a speech about her majesty clearly there are no depths companies will sink to other than interrupt a speech so eloquently spoken.
