Queen Charlotte track nearly cost me my marriage!!!

I decided to take my wife on a scenic ride on a section of the Queen Charlotte track. We were both on E bikes so figured it would be an easy ride.
My wife did NOT find it easy at all and it turned out to be a tough day out.

  1. What is it with women and hard work? Mine almost killed me after I took her up the climb to Corridor in Rotorua. We went the 'easy' way too, up past Old Exit, the back way. Not straight up Katore Road.

  2. Iโ€™ve had plenty of โ€œGREAT IDEAโ€ฆ!!โ€ rides like that where my wife was not digginโ€™ the death march ! Kinda funny to laugh about it later, once comfortably back in camp. Cheers! PS- gotta cut down one side only on my wifeโ€™s bars tooโ€ฆha ha ha

  3. Me and my wife just watched your video. I couldn't believe the similarities. We've survived that and now my wife's riding has improved riding together is much more fun now. Adventure riding together is lots of fun

  4. so you do know if you keep saying your wifes grumpy and she can hear it she will get grumpier, good video tho I had a good laugh watching it – hopefully no devoice by the end of the trip, maybe more plastic gifts for the bike or perhaps not – great views as a reward helps by looks of things

  5. No sympathy, Mrs BDE rides for enjoyment, you know that, we know that. By wtaching parts that she had ridden I could see there were bits that she coud have ridden in the first part of the morning but she was so over you and your ride she was just getting off and pushing. Beer and Chips does put a smile on the dial though

  6. Your wife is honestly such a trooper. I can really relate to how she feels when sheโ€™s using the walk mode on her ebike โ€ฆ as someone whoโ€™s 50kg as well it definitely is a struggle . Keep the videos coming and Jacqueline is doing an amazing job !

  7. Awesome video Lance and Jacqueline really enjoyed it. Those views were amazing really well worth the climbing up those horrible hills. Hey quick question have you shown her where her turbo is on her bike it may help her out when climbing next time and maybe even more enjoyable for her. Make every thing easier for the Lady happy wife and happy husband. Always looking forward to seeing you both on the next adventure ๐Ÿ˜Š

  8. Lol… I was lucky enough to help out a friend with a Caravan to the South Island and in return we did the Queen Charlotte. Wifey wasn't happy that I wasn't doing it with her. Half way through I said to wifey, I don't know if you'll enjoy this.!! Wifey said "I knew you would say that". What's your thoughts?

  9. Don't know what your itinerary is in the south island but if you want a challenge do the Paparoa on the west coast. 56km. You can ride it and she can run it. First 19km is challenging up hill but after that there is some cool downhill. Gets up to about 1100m

  10. My partner and I were watching your video and she said, 'Wasn't that you that commented on her bars being too long?' and then later commented and said, 'omg there's two of you!' ๐Ÿคฃ That said, being that she 5'0" I have her bars cut down to 730mm and have her control adjusted accordingly. She has small hands so I have smaller diameter, comfy grips installed. I've adjusted her brake levers closer to the bars and moved all the controls outwards so she's uses the whole length of her bars now ๐Ÿ˜‰Reducing the stem length may or may not help depending on the bike's reach.

To be honest, the biggest issue with shorter riders is the ability to put their feet flat on the ground. It something that we all take for granted, but would we buy a bike where we straddle the top tube and balanced on our tippy toes when stopped? Although in my head it wasn't the popular solution, running shorter cranks and a 27.5/26 mullet configuration was the solution. I mean the Big Hit and Brodie Devo were both very popular back in the day and they were running a 26/24 mullet config. Even my 6'3" friend rode one for years without complaint. That said, she loves this setup now as her confidence has gone through the roof being able to put her feet flat on the ground in emergency situations/climbs and when coming to a stop. The dropper learning curve took a little work, but she's got that worked out now. I picked up a shorter dropper that could be completely slammed into the seat tube for clearance. The key was getting a 37mm offset 27.5 fork for the transformation. She also gained travel since the 27.5" fork is shorter(a2c) than a 29" fork of equal travel. No pedal strikes either ๐Ÿ‘Œ

As I'm sure you know, patience is the key… for both parties ๐Ÿ™ƒ Cheers to you and Jacqueline and your new adventures together! ๐Ÿ’œ

  11. We done the 4 day hike from the top, most of the time I was thinking I should have bought the bike but some of those hills are soul destroying, especially on a steam bike. Great vid again!
