Love this instructional video! Just one question. You said to use tile tape with the triple wall pipe that goes loosely into the fitting.
What is tile tape?
Congrats my friend, the video is very useful
This such an informative video. Thank you! Currently working to fix blocked downspout drainage on my farm homestead in Iowa. General drainage is not an issue as the house is on a hill but it is a wood foundation so triple concerned about moving the roof water away. Knowing about the double walled corrugated means we won’t have to dig near 6 feet deep below the frost line to install pvc.
The info you provide is so good. I would say that a more comprehensive intro would be wonderful. I had gone to another video and happened to come back and then learned about the double wall. I almost missed the best solution entirely.
Cheers to your work and sharing your knowledge!!
I am trying to install the foundation drain. Living in Massachusetts, which is rather a northern state. The footings are 8’ below the ground, way below the frost line. So the temperature is not a concern but the weight of the filler is. When the trench is filled, there will be 8’ of rock and soil pushing down that “burrito”. Which pipe is more suitable from the performance standpoint ?
Great, constructive philosophy. Thank you !
Thank you . From Australia .
PVC cracks I should know my vent pipes going through my roof cracked and split and that was the thicker wall pvc put on my modular house back in 2004 when it was built by Norris homes . It lasted 10 years and replaced it with PVC again ( BIG MISTAKE THERE ) but plumber told me to use pvc again and now replaced with ABS pipe and guess what it has not crack so far . But it has only been a year since I put on the new roof with ice and water shield and new vent pipes and new boots and metal boots not those stupid plastic ones like I had . Bigger cap on new boots .Not cheap when you have 6 of them . I even have seen my nieghbors have to replace theirs also pvc to abs . I am up on a hill like most of the houses here and wind , driving rain and sun I guess causes the problem . There are 5 houses up on the same side of the hill and we have all had to replace them .
For downspout drainage in northern states, what’s the difference between using triple wall HDPE or the French Drain Man pipe? I’m running into an issue now where a single wall corrugated long pipe run is backing up and if it needs to be replaced, I want to make sure I use the best pipe possible and add a few cleanouts because there are none now. Thanks for the informative video.
How about the difference between smooth walled and corugated pipe if it comes to creating turbulence inside the pipe and selfclean…
i didnt think of roots at the time i installed a french drain, that was ten years ago,now i have roots clogging ,4 feet into my gutters
Very interesting!! What kind of pipe would you use for a sump pump discharge that you want to buried and run to a culvert in a northern county ?
Love this video! I thought I knew it all.
I have a question though. Why aren't foundation drain systems installed with clean outs? My house is about 50 years old and my basement recently started getting wet during heavy rain. Ive been told that the entire drain tile needs to be replaced for a gazillion dollars, so im considering doing an interior drain/sump pump system instead. But if there were clean outs at the corners id have options. So wtf?
This is total hogwash. Materials engineer? I think not. There is nothing incorrect about using big box store pipe. Saying that virgin hope is the way to go is not Green. Recycling is far better for the environment especially if it’s more affordable. Buy and use the best product for your purpose. I over engineer nearly everything I design. However it’s not always the best way to go. You lack best practices in professional engineering design and practices which requires budgetary responsibility for client needs. It’s unethical to push an overly expensive solution over an adequate solution. Somebody drank the cool-aide 😉
How does the pipe crack if it's surrounded by rock?
I can't believe it took me this long to learn that about corrugated. Thank you.
What about the slits that allow water to come in? Not all of them have that… so for drainage designed to catch rain water and not just route it, the holes are necessary yes?
Which one is best in clay soil in California?
My problem: water comming down my driveway to my garage has alot of debris and soil. So anything l put as a drain starts to plug up with the dirt in the water. So will using a 8" dia. PVC with an open top so l can clean out the mud and using some removable big grates?
Thanks for an excellent educational video! Carry On Sir!
Hi there. Saying something once is plenty good. Aimless repeated rambling is like fingernails on a chalkboard.. my goodness🥴🤮
Very informative, thanks!
Is north carolina suitable for pvc?
Thank you- would like to hear about toxicity if materials if d- pipes are routed to food or animal fields/ ponds/ discharge
Amazing video! This kept me from making several mistakes with the HD pipe and fitting I just bought and thought I'd put together with pvc glue. Thanks!
I learned so much . I only wish you serviced the Washington DC area
I dug a 100 ft French drain 6 ft parallel from moms basement wall ( by hand thru lots of clay). I laid 2 "french drain man" blue pipes in my wrap at the bottom abuut 16" down and her sump pump stopped running constantly. All the water gets taken to the street instead of piling up at her basement wall. I love how effective properly installed french drains are!!
Where can I buy perforated SDR35?? I have looked at Lowes and Home Depot and they don't have it. I'm thinking about just drilling the holes myself.
I have a steel roof with no rain gutters at my cabin (32×20, 8000 ft).
So obviously, I needed a ground gutter. I used 3" thin wall white perforated pipe.
I lined a trench under the drip line with black plastic. Then put Dibiten roofing membrane over the black plastic and used Lexel to seal the joints.
Then covered the pipe with 2" of "-1" gravel and over the top covered the whole thing with 3" of pea gravel. I can hardly wait for spring and see how it performs.
I work at a wet utility company and have for over 20 years. I even learned a few things about the north vs south thing. All the information is spot on good job.
