Putin and the Presidents (full documentary) | FRONTLINE

FRONTLINE investigates Russian President Vladimir Putin’s clashes with five American presidents as he’s tried to rebuild the Russian empire.

Drawing on in-depth conversations with insiders from five U.S. presidential administrations, former U.S. intelligence leaders, diplomats, Russian politicians, authors and journalists, “Putin and the Presidents” reveals how the miscalculations and missteps of multiple American presidents over two decades paved the way for Putin’s attack on Ukraine — as seen through the eyes of people who were in the room.

The documentary traces how, prior to launching the war on Ukraine, Putin tested the waters by defying American presidents for 20 years — including by invading Georgia, seizing Crimea, and interfering in a U.S. presidential election. The documentary provides unique insight into the icy relationship between Putin and current U.S. President Joe Biden, both of whom were shaped by the Cold War, and into the evolution of Putin’s grievances with the U.S. and the West.

As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues, “Putin and the Presidents” gives essential context for this historic moment.

  1. This documentary is hard on Pres Trump’s presidency. However, the facts of reality scream very wildly. Putin did not move forward his authoritarian agenda under Trump. Unlike under Presidents Clinton, Bush Jr, and Biden there was peace and Russian fear during the Trump administration. As soon as Biden was elected the facts point out that it was a green light for the invasion

  7. I thought this was a documentary but it turns out it's a Democrat campaign ad as usual. It's funny how Putin didn't play with Trump but he runs over Joey tell I'm wrong! Then seeing John Boltons fake ass attack Trump was laughable. It was Trump that sent real arms to Ukraine, and Trump was wrong to allow the warmongering pukes in Congress to do it! Putin was worried about Trump because Trump was unpredictable. It was the other President's Putin knew he could control. This campaign ad is missing so many facts and is full of half-truths……

  8. To the Crimea thing, they forgot the backdrop:
    – US + NATO staged a Coup d'état in Ukraine after they didn't like a pro-Russian candidate that was elected democratically.
    – After this, Donbass and Luhansk + Crimea wanted to leave Ukraine, this was followed by Ukraine government killing about 15k civilians in Luhansk and Donetsk for the last 10 years.
    – A large mass of Russians + Ukrainians with pro-Russian sentiment live in eastern + southern Ukraine.
    – US + NATO are treating this is a 3rd world South American or Middle East situation(toppling leaders we don't like), but it is not.
    – We here in the west are ruffling feathers that could lead us to a WW3.
    – We were heavily involved and influencing Ukraine pre/post 2014 Ukraine.

Imagine a great nation like China or Russia firing up Coup d'état's in Mexico/Canada, how would we react?

  9. This has some serious flaws in the historical events of the past presidents relationships. You didn’t mention once how in 2018/19 how we bombed Syria/Russian military bases.. I think that is important to the development of this story. Geez I mean Trump is no saint but that doesn’t mean you have to leave a large part of US/Russia relations out of this documentary. How can I watch PBS knowing that whatever I’m watching could be factually flawed?
