I finally tried Reaper. Coming from Pro tools this was actually pretty refreshing. I had some issues getting REAInsert to work properly. But I’m sure that can be something I figure out down the line. Once I got going I was shocked at how fast Reaper really is. I really like this.

DISCLAIMER: I am not a pro in Reaper. This was to see how quickly someone with a working knowledge of a DAW could potentially switch. (totally asking for a friend BTW)

  1. Enjoyed this video man. Funny to see you struggling. As a logic user it seems a little less intuitive but I can see if you stuck with it, it’s probably better than PT, especially with PT’s many known drawbacks

  2. I'm curious to see your take on some entirely web-based DAWs (all in the browser). Obviously they are very limiting compared to something like a PT setup with $10Ks worth of plugins, but as a learning tool for people just getting into or learning about music tech stuff, it feels like it might deliver a more consistent experiences across devices and OS's.

  3. Wait till he dips his toes into the scripts. There's thousands of 'em!

Sure there's the whole problem with "everything has a button" now, but once you get it all situated just the way you like it, the limitless automation and CPU time is amazing. Not to mention the free effects and instruments! And if you know how to Javascript or Python, you can make your solutions yourself!

Also using 32-bit plug-ins is real nice thanks to the built-in wrapper.

  5. Reaper has been one of those DAWs i've used for over a decade now. The sheer amount of power behind it got me away from Pro Tools 8 M-Powered back in the day. And as soon as I studied a bit more of Reaper over 2 years, I was doing extremely crazy things. my sound design game went up by leaps and bounds to the point I was doing weird stuff and adding orchestra and choir to basically an industrial death metal thing. Reaper's power is underestimated by so many. I always suggest giving it a shot for more than a month or two, and if it's not your jam, bounce and try something else. doesn't hurt. Hopefully you find the DAW that works best for you after the Pro Tools issue! I favor Reaper and Cubase personally, and just uninstalled PT the other week due to the subscription switch and killing perpetual licensing. That to me is a request to fail in due time.

  6. I wish there was (perhaps there is?) a simple video that just show a seasoned Reaper user mixing a song to actually show how things are done. No talking, just doing things. Just as if you would look over his shoulder. I think that would help guys like you to see how a configured Reaper speed up things remarkably and how things can be preset to suit your workflow. It's one thing to know what Reaper can do by looking at the menue, it's another thing, though, to see functions you would never know as a beginner.
Saying that because someone mentioned Kenny Rogers, who really is a Reaper-pro guy. But the thing with such tutorial videos is they show you one thing at a time. Watching a mixing session is totally different because you see ALL things in one video that actually make the workflow

  7. Personally price for performance has me sold on studio one. I use Presonus gear as well studio live series 3 being able to write automation on my board using all the faders makes that process so much faster.

  8. As a almost fifteen year long Reaper user, this is hard to watch, because I immediately and constantly see what's wrong plus uncountable things I'd change in the layout and workflow, but when I'm just listening and can't see what the screen looks like I feel empathy for you. My suggestion is that you don't learn as you're going but instead bite the bullet and buyAdam Steele's Reaper course. piece-meal videos and advice won't give you the same level of knowledge and top level understanding as that course

  9. I think if we are talking about protools we are really taking about Ultimate, if its just the normal protools then any daw is good. So because Audio post is the one who really make use a lot of things in protools ultimate the only DAW I know that people from sound post will touch (which is almost impossible) is Nuendo, Youll have the same automation and capability, just done a bit differently.

  10. As a loyal Reaper user any of us would be sorely remiss not to recommend you to "The Oracle" (Kenny Gioia) aka Reaper Mania on YouTube. Anything you want to know how to do, Kenny has a video on it. I recommend you subscribe to his channel and Jon Tidey's @The Reaper Blog as well. Jon always does video updates following version updates to tell about all the new features. Very helpful indeed!

  11. I made the jump from Cubase to Reaper about 5 or 6 years ago, and it was a breeze. I was never satisfied with Cubase performance, most of all, and that is what drew me into Reaper. I know there's a lot more you can do in Reaper flexibility-wise, and I know it's overwhelming at first, but my approach was to learn things one at a time only as I needed it. I would google "how to do X in Reaper" and the answer was a click away. I love it.

  12. Hey buddy, welcome to reaper. Dock your mixer. Right click in a blank spot, down the bottom is dock mixer. Watch Kenny, here https://youtu.be/e3sVPiruiUM
In other vids, he dives deep into various workflows where this is handy. On timing, start a new project and becore you import media, set the bpm. Your imports will then comply with the default bpm of your stage. Ive found, since learning reaper the past 3 years, its handy to have a "template mentality". Build the stage defaults, ux, theme, import, colour, label, iconize, etc. Im with you bruvva, learning….gluck, shes a brilliant beast. Oh…VST everything, but she'll read whatever even AAX 🙂

  13. The popping and jumping is processor overloading. Mute effects on tracks your not listening to. Processing speed of load, not processing load. But yes having fx windows open will also do that. Think manual shift sports car

  14. I run a multi-monitor setup, so having stuff stay open hasn't been a hassle. I just park them off to the side. You can set the mixer strip to live at the bottom of the screen. I especially like the fact that, unlike ProTools, I'm not out a few thousand dollars on proprietary gear and software. 😉

  15. I've been really enjoying your videos recently, and enjoying your exploration of new DAWs. I was thinking, have you considered Black Magic Resolve ? It's audio system is based on the Fairlight EVO.. could be an interesting choice (the software is free also). I made a wee video with my Fairlight EVO with you specifically in mind. https://youtu.be/JELcP6AAp08 – keep up the good work man.

  16. Been using Reaper since Version 3. You can actually import custom skins and layouts in REAPER, to point you can make it look and operate like any DAW you want – even Pro Tools. You can also undock and float some of the interfaces into their own window, if you have a dual monitor setup. You can also change the docking functionality from the bottom to the left or right side of the window if you'd rather keep everything together (it looks like you have an ultrawide, so that might work well for you).

  17. I see you don't use control surfaces, but even if you don't in the control room, sometimes it's handy out on the floor to have one as you set things up / tweak things. Here's a couple of quick vids, nowhere near your vid production level 🙂 and a link to the almost 6 year project the community has been working on, it's extremely down in the nerdy weeds, but the outcomes are impressive, shows off the great Reaper community spirit. Lastly, there is a pic of someone who used the project to whip up a great tablet interface similar to Avid Control. Took him bout a week using the tools we build at the CSI project — Control Surface Integrator — you can also use it roll your own poor mans (or maybe even better, some say) Avid S6, etc.

These are, as is standard in Reaper world, free for all the Reaper community to use, it's a very special place.

Also, this is important and you are already discovering it — it takes commitment, don't try to make reaper like PT, watch Kenny's videos, as well as the ones from Mike and others and get into the Reaper groove.

Don't know if you are hip to the pricing model — $225 if yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000, $60 otherwise — there is absolutely no difference in the software, it is in true Reaper fashion, an honor system approach, and no copy protection anywhere, as I'm sure you are aware.

The license is good for 3 major revisions, right now Reaper is in the 6.xx realm, so the license is good until Reaper 9.0, typically about 3-4 years or so, once again all on the honor system.

Releases are frequent, a few per month sometimes, and almost never break anything, very occasionally this happens of course, but it is rare indeed.

Performance as of about 4 years ago, it's better now 🙂

  19. On the PC version there is a thumbtack icon on the mixer and plugins window that solves the focus issue (plugin window always behind mixer), I dont see it on your MAC setup…???
