  1. I seem to recall liberal plans for conventionally powered French submarines, and the leasing of 2-3 nuclear powered Virginia class submarines in the meantime. The French subs were scrapped when Morrison started Aukus. Despite no contracts and no obligation to do so, Albo decided to kiss Macron’s butt with a $835m gift of Australian taxpayer money.

  2. It never made sense to put Tomahawks in the Collins subs. Todays announcement is defense admitting what they know all along, that it was never going to happen.

I lot of things get announced with no intension of ever following through. You never know which announcements are legit and which are short term political announcements destined to be cancelled before the bill is due. Frustrating but business and usual for defense.

  3. Lets outline all of the history. The submarine question should have been settled during the RGR years, but all Labor did was cut the budget and delay a decision. Abbott was going for the outstanding Japanese DE, until stabbed by Malcolm who went for the French abortion. ScoMo was right to ditch the French and go for AUKUS, but they are to long into the future. If we can't get Virginia class, we should grovel to the Poms for a couple of Astute class, if not back to the Japanese for a few of their DE's until AUKUS is constructed.
