Pressure on Liberals as Richard Marles commits 2.4 per cent GDP to Defence funding by 2034

Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell says Defence Minister Richard Marles committing 2.4 per cent of GDP to defence funding by 2033/34 puts pressure on the Opposition.

The Deputy Prime Minister announced a $50 billion boost in defence spending during a National Press Club address in Canberra on Wednesday.

“The fascinating thing looking forward over the next few months on this is, are the Opposition going to stump up?” Mr Clennell said in response.

“If they’re still going to kick Richard Marles for building it up to 2.4 per cent.

“It does go back on to the Opposition now because the first question to them is, well are you going to lift that? And how are you going to pay for it?”
