I used Portugal's historical naval escapades as the basis for a space empire I created years ago, so I'm definitely going to be playing them first in 3.0 once it's released.

Sad that the Dutch backed out of the war with a peace deal when they were so close to taking the Rhineland. But I guess it might have been too costly for them to go on and decided to opt out, leaving what remained of the German territories for your taking.

it might be interesting to see an 'auxiliary cruiser' hull using the transport hull as a light/heavy cruiser with a weak stat-wise but very cheap hull and little to no armour but decent firepower

Croatia Falls! 23:13:

With the Deutsches Reich now at war with the Estado Novo do Brasil the capture of Croatia cuts them off from the Mediterranean Sea. The Exército Brasileiro is pushing against the provinces of Austria and Hungary as well as Latvia while the Crusader State of Groot-Nederland is pressing Germany in Ukraine and Germany proper. Germany is blockaded, and its colonies in Africa are under attack. The Reino de España is supporting operations against Germany as well. The British and Koreans are helping in the attacks from the Low Lands.
The Marinha de Guerra Brasil is moving against the Azores and Madeira.
Strike on Funchal 24:36:

The Montanha, lead of her class of Encrouraçdos, from the Maizuru Naval Base de North Honshu, and three Encrouraçdos Rapido, the Foguete, lead of her class, her sister ship Invictus Cohete, and the Brazilia, lead of her class, from the La Spezia Naval Base de Northwest Italy, arrived at Madeira and moved to attack the port of Funchal. They found three X-Class Cruzadore Protegido under construction and destroyed them in their slipways.

The port of Funchal on the Island of Madeira, one of two remaining to the Governo no ExĂlio do Reino de Portugal, is ready to fall, and the Marinha Real Portuguesa, rather than letting four X-class Cruzadore Protegido and one CL-595 class Destruidor hulls fall into our hand, sent the ships out with partial crews and scuttled them in deep water.

The landlocked German occupied province of Chad, part of the Sub-Saharan region, has fallend to the Exército Brasileiro. The Exército Brasileiro took 3064 casualties while the Deutsche Völksheer lost 7973 men.
The Exército Brasileiro is also pressing into the Balkan province of Bosnia & Herzegovina as the Fuzileiros Navais begin the landings on the Azores.
Battle of Ponta Delgada 28:15:
EstadĂŁo, 14 April 1941
Three Encrouraçdos Rapido from the Livorno Naval Base de Northwest Italy, the Vickers, lead of her class, the Louco, lead of her class, and the Brazilia class Nigella, attacked the port of Ponta Delgada and surprisingly found the X-class Cruzadore Protegido CL-595-5 coming out to meet them. This one was finished and operational, and actually tried to close for battle.
From the survivors we discovered that the Governo no ExĂlio do Reino de Portugal has fallen and the Republic of the Azores has been declared. Brasila has refused to consider negotiations with this new government and is continuing their campaign. Madeira has fallen with some 18 hundred casualties for the Fuzileiros Navais while the Portuguese took 36 hundred, and Bosnia & Herzegovina has also fallen, with the ExĂ©rcito Brasileiro taking 446 casualties and the Portuguese 810.
Groot-Nederland Wins Ukraine, Ends War on Germany 28:55:

The Crusader State of Groot-Nederland has ended their war with the Deutsches Reich after taking the province of Ukraine. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland remains at war with the Deutsches Reich and is supporting the Marinha de Guerra Brasil in blockading Germanyâs North Sea and Baltic coasts. Korea, America, and amusing the Azores are also at war with Germany.
The province of Austria has fallen to the Exército Brasileiro. Campaigns to take Latvia and Hungary are under way.

The islands of the Azores have fallen and the last vestiges of the Portuguese Empire have been taken by the Estado Novo do Brasil. The fleet is moving towards Norway and Sweden, under German occupation.
Short Naval Battles 1940
Battle of Bar 13:00:
EstadĂŁo, 10 January 1940
The ParaguassĂș, lead of the her class of Cruzadores Caçador, from the Gaeta Naval Base de Central Italy, was on patrol off the port of Bar when she found two X-Class Cruzadores Protegido, CL-595-11 and CL-595-19, escorting three 4.7 thousand ton 24 manned 3.4â armed transports. Working alone, ParaguassĂș sank CL-595-11 with 290 of her 306 man crew. CL-595-19 tried to torpedo ParaguassĂș, but missed badly. ParaguassĂș launched her torpedoes in reply. One hit as CL-595-19 sank with 107 of her 306 man crew. The rest had abandoned ship when they saw the two spreads of five coming in.
Then it was on to the transports, sinking TR-1408 with 20 of her 24 man crew, TR-2953 with 22 and the convoy leader with 20 men. In all the Portuguese Merchant Marine lost another 14 thousand gross registered tons, 62 officers and seamen killed, and 10 captured.
The Marinha Real Portuguesa lost two Cruzadores to one opponent, 397 officers and sailors killed, and 215 captured, 199 of them from CL-595-19. CL-595-19 did manage to inflict 1 casualty on ParaguassĂș.
The Mountain 15:49:
EstadĂŁo, 18 March 1940
The Montanha, lead of her class of Encrouraçdos, and the six Encrouraçdos Rapido, the Vickers, lead of her class, the Louco, lead of her class, the Foguete, lead of her class and her sister ship Invictus Cohete, and the Brazilia, lead of her class and her sister ship Nigella, found the X-Class Cruzadore Protegido X-Class-2.
Sighting X-Class-2 to the east, the fleet formed up on Montanha and began to open fire. Montanha got the first hits, four 16â shells blasting straight through X-Class-2. Foguete got one of her 14â shells to stick, doing serious damage amidships. X-Class-2 was flooded forward and lost one engine as well as nearly 50 men. More shells came in, either blowing through the Portuguese ship or impacting on the armor. A 14â shell from Louco blew off the forward superstructure, taking out the conning tower and main tower. More hits opened the rest of X-Class-2 up to the sea, and she sank with 287 of her 306 man crew. 19 survivors were picked up from the sea.
The Victorious 18:36:
EstadĂŁo, 13 May 1940
With Montenegro now in our hands the main fleet has moved up the Adriatic to begin the landings against Croatia. However the Portuguese may attempt to run ships out of the Adriatic to the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores. Hence the ParaguassĂș class Cruzador Escoteiro La Victoriosa from the Gaeta Naval Base de Central Italy, and the Iguatemi, lead of her class of Destruidores, from the Heraklion Naval Base de Crete, were on patrol in the Strait of Otranto.
They found two X-Class Cruzadore Protegido, the CL-595-3 and CL-595-18 to the north-east, and La Victoriosa charged them down with Iguatemi following. With her 7â guns La Victoriosa outranged the 6.1â guns on the Portuguese ships. She was able to take out both secondary magazines on CL-595-3 before sinking her with 275 of her 306 man crew.
CL-595-18 decided to come in bow first, making herself a more difficult target. But as she closed the La Victoriosa and Iguatemi found the target. Finally however La Victoriosa was able to get around enough to put flooding hits on CL-595-18 aft, sinking her with 290 of her 306 man crew.
Iguatemi picked up the 47 survivors.
Battle of PeljeĆĄac Peninsula 07:09:
EstadĂŁo, 22 December 1939
Thirteen 5 thousand ton 26 manned armed transports of the Portuguese Merchant Marine were moving along the Peljeƥac Peninsula escorted by four X-Class Cruzadores Protegido, CL-595-16, Vasco da Gama, X-class-1, and CL-595-21, along with the Destruidore CL-595-15, apparently named this by the Marinha Real Portuguesa to disguise just how weak their navy has become. They were found by the Vingança, lead of her class of Cruzadores Blindado, from the Messina Naval Base de Sicily, the Gurupå class Destruidor Samba, from the Rhodes Naval Base de Dodecanese, and the Julio de Noronha class Destruidor Cavalo de Guerra, from the Bari Naval Base de Southern Italy, coming in from the south from the mouth of the Adriatic.
Vingança soon found the transports and opened fire, and then sighted the escorts. The TR-1766 was sunk with all hands. Cavalo de Guerra hit the CL-595-15 with a 5â main belt penetration. Though she was under a smoke screen the X-class-1 was taken out in one salvo, breaking up and losing 281 of her 306 man crew. Vingança edged into range with her 3â guns, even though this was risky considering the reach of the Portuguese torpedoes. She was able to finish the Destruidore CL-595-15 with 138 of her 147 man crew, but had to dodge incoming torpedoes. Vingança pulled around, and despite Cavalo de Guerra seeing if she could race a torpedo, the task force was able dodge them all, and followed Vingança into the heart of the convoy while the escorts let them.
TR-2804 was broken, losing 24 of her 26 man crew. TR-1004 lost 25 of her crew when she sank. At the same time the 10â guns took out the CL-595-21, sinking her with 272 of her 306 man crew.
10:45: So desperate for any hits on the raiders the TR-1540, TR-1458, and TR-1624 shot up their own convoy with 3â guns as Vingança broke through their line. The Portuguese escorts got in the act, hitting transports with 2.6â guns. TR-557 surrendered after losing 11 men, through since she did in Portuguese, we are not sure who she was asking to stop shooting her. Finally the Portuguese stopped shooting at themselves and Vingança had to get back to the business herself.
Cavalo de Guerra torpedoed TR-95 has she passed astern of her, getting four of five hits but with one dud. TR-95 flooded out and sank with 22 of her 26 man crew. TR-1959 was blown out of the water, losing 22 men. TR-2793 lost 23 men.
Vingança found CL-595-16 again. She had expended bout her 1.9â and 2.6â magazines, lost her rudder and two engines, and was hopelessly fighting flooding and fire, with 59 of her cadet crew already lost. CL-595-16 sank with 257 of her 306 man crew to the incoming sea. Vingança turned her 10â guns on Vasco da Gama. Samba and Cavalo de Guerra sank TR-1246 and then TR-1664 with 22 men each. Samba put a torpedo into Vasco da Gama, but it was a dud. Vasco da Gama was able to hit Samba back.
Vingança forced the convoy leader to surrender after inflicting 11 casualties. TR-1540 sank with 22 men. Finally Vingança sank the Vasco da Gama with 260 of her 306 man crew. TR-1458 was sunk with 22 dead, then TR-1624 was blown up, losing 24 men. In all the Portuguese Merchant Marine lost 66 thousand gross registered tons of shipping, 276 officers and seamen killed, and 62 captured. The Marinha Real Portuguesa lost five of their few ships, 1208 officers and sailors killed, and 163 captured.
Vingança took 27 casualties from her crew of 915, Samba 15 from her crew of 128, and Cavalo de Guerra 6 from her crew of 146.
Battle of Durazzo 00:11:
EstadĂŁo, 22 December 1939
The Vingança class Cruzador Blindado Valente Renascido, from the Gaeta Naval Base de Central Italy, joined the Pirajå class Cruzador Escoteiro Arapaima from the Taranto Naval Base de Southern Italy, on a patrol of the newly taken Albanian coast north of Durazzo looking for any Portuguese ships moving through the area. They found the five Portuguese X-Class Cruzadores Protegido, CL-595-2, CL-595-10, CL-494-20, CL-1411, and CL-2242, and the Destruidore named CL-595-6, escorting seven 48 hundred ton 24 manned armed transports.
The first ship encountered was the CL-595-10, who engaged the raiders well clear of the convoy. The CL-595-10 was sunk at range with 89 of her 306 man crew as the raiders cruised by, looking for more prey.
The waves were very choppy when Valente Renascido sighted the first ships of the convoy to the north. Valente Renascido opened fire and got the first hit on the CL-595-6. She was soon sunk with 144 of her 147 man crew.
The TR-882 was then sunk with 20 of her 24 man crew. The CL-2242 was blown out of the water, losing 297 of her 306 man crew. TR-67 was sunk with 22 casualties.
CL-595-20 launched a torpedo at Valente Renascido. This got her their full attention, and CL-595-20 was sunk with 266 of her 306 man crew only minutes too late to see Valente Renascido turn back into the track of her torpedo, taking the hit and 23 casualties.
CL-1411 was also shattered by shell fire and sank with 263 of her 306 man crew. CL-595-2 surrendered after losing 129 men. TR-626 was sunk with 22 men lost, as was TR-1647. TR-422 lost 21 men. TR-1862 sank, losing 22 men. Then the convoy leader was sunk with all 24 men.
In total the Portuguese Merchant Marine lost 34 thousand gross registered tons of shipping, 153 officers and seamen killed, and 15 captured. The Marinha Real Portuguesa lost 1188 officers and sailors killed and 489 taken prisoner. Three of the wounded from the Valente Renascido recovered from their injuries and were returned to duty.
