  1. 7:45 Was it because it wasn't as good, or because the people/circle you're desperately trying to please all feel a certain way and you want to impress them? Also, 13:50 to skip the preachy preamble if you came here to hear a review about a popular song.

  2. Funny you mention Maroon 5. When he competed on The Voice, he started off on Usher’s team but was later on Adam Levine’s team. He took too much music advice from that man.

  3. >90% of stuff I listen to is unlikely to ever see radio play. Not because it's too niche – at some point getting tens of millions of views per video on Youtube alone gets hard not to call "mainstream" in some way, shape, or form – but because it kind of seems like radio is a whole separate insular world from online music.

I doubt many online-first artists out there would turn down an offer for radio play, of course, but I also doubt many of them are actively seeking it out. Just a different world with different demographics, it kind of seems.

Meanwhile there are dozens of artists for whom an album that gets zero radio play is an unmitigated disaster. Not just the Ariana Grandes, but smaller ones too.

The end result of this is that a lot of these "pop song reviews" are my first exposure to these songs. Which is an interesting experience.

  4. I'm listening to this going it sounds like someone else.

YES, Maroon Five is it. If you told me this was a cover I would believe it.

It sounds like a pop song with a country music overcoat on.

  5. Gah I wish I hadn't read the comments. I get bummed out by all the passive aggressive productivity/late-shaming comments Todd gets. Like every 3rd person doesn't have to make a crack about whether or not Todd's free content to us is "on time" or not. I don't think people realize how overwhelming + unfunny those comments come off to other people who struggle to keep up with life's demands. Those kinds of comments never helped me be productive before/while I was diagnosed with adhd & losing the career I loved bc the process of diagnosis + treatment took so long…it's upsetting to see how prevalent societal shaming about this stuff is & how aggro teasing about it is.

  6. Indeed Todd, you ARE my sole source of pop music news. You're the only one who can frame it in a way that makes any sense to me. Otherwise, it's just perusing the internet for unreleased Run The Jewels tracks and wondering when The Smile is playing in my city again.

  7. Todd, there is still good county music, but none of it is in Nashville. Music row is dead. There are guys like Childers, Simpson, Jinks, and even a few good country bands. If you still have an appetite for country, the last place to look is the radio. It's all dolled up nashville trash.

  8. So he called his buddy a p**y a* n****r while somebody was recording him without him knowing when he was piss drunk. Stupid thing to do, but I think it's pretty obvious there wasn't any hatred behind those words. Insensitive and silly mistake, yes. Grounds to blacklist a person? Absolutely not.

  9. Todd don’t worry about your music picks there is a reason you’re a music critic and not a music producer, I has forgotten this happened because at the time I was working 7 12 and I didn’t care but you did a good job wrapping it up for me

  10. I was gonna make a joke about "grip the sheets with your fingertips" like, as opposed to what? Gripping the sheets with your butt cheeks?

But then I realized that would unironically be a better line. Like if there's a Butthole Surfers of country music, it would be perfect for whoever that is.

  11. Yeah man.

The bare minimum in an apology tour is the best thing you can do.

If he did too much. He's doing too much. If he does too little. He's doing too little.

If he does the bare minimum. Warm porridge.

  12. I promise you almost no one was offended. You hear that word dozens, if not hundreds of times a day in music on the radio—persons of all races and ages singing along. Don't pretend it doesn't happen.

  13. I always dislike vague nothing song writing. Say what you will about plinkerton el scorcho is about a specific situation, it’s real emotions. Morgan wallen might as well make a song about his girlfriend who’s in Canada in no world is last night inspired by any real human connection he had

  14. Been a huge fan of yours since 2009 despite having radically different taste in music from you because your analysis and criticism are always on point and hilarious.

Seriously though… When did your critical thinking skills desert you? Why do you think it’s acceptable to make incredibly sexist insults and a woman who disagrees with you?

I guess they have to be young and precocious like Lorde or Billie to get heard 😞

  15. Todd has gone from my favorite music reviewer to a person who focuses on politics but shows he doesn’t have a grasp on political history at all. Todd stick to what you are good at and that is talking music. When you do the political stuff most of us are here rolling our eyes saying “is it time to unsubscribe to this idiot?”.
