So you're playing UG Merfolk in Pioneer. Will you start incorporating Green into your modern list?
Since you're running Kumena, you could also throw Herald of Secret Streams in here to make all creatures with +1/+1 counters unblockable. It's 4 mana, but it's probably easier to get that online in Pioneer. You can use Kumena's ability on your opponents endstep. Then slam Herald, swimg out for the win
Hope ti see you in modern again!
Is merfolk mistbinder any good? Seems like you could play it instead of mistcaller, since you have enough 1 drops in green anyway
How do you feel about Kopala, warden of waves?
I just bought the cards for this last night! Such good timing.
is it just me or have cards so much more text now? Couldn't bring myself to read the soul cauldron
Personally, deeproot and tidebinder have made merfolk the most fun deck just for the playstyle alone
Any thoughts on running Mist-Cloaked Herald, Tritorn Shorestalker (both are u 1/1 unblockable), or River Sneak (1u 1/1 unblockable (another merfolk etb gets +1/+1 until end of turn)) to push damage?
I think you could have been clearer on the kiora’s follower/Soul Cauldron/vizier/forensic researcher deck because it does have merits – it was getting results before your tempo version. But none of those cards work in the tempo version and requires a dedicated deck. Whether that deck is viable is its own video probably.
With Kumena 2 merfolk and a pilgrimage, at end of their turn you can generate three tokens and draw a card, hence the power of the low to the ground 1-drop heavy list.
What are your thoughts on River Herald Scout? It’s a blue branchwalker but is also a 1/2 or 2/3 making some red removal harder. Is it a better Silvergill?
Been running this since your last video,it’s been a lot of fun. Though I keep getting stomped by phoenix
Thank you so much for your amazing content 🙂
You mentioned that you playtested with Vodalian Mindsinger (I would imagine you had it in the sideboard), but you never elaborated on it. I'm thinking you prefer the frog effects? Maybe 4 frog effects + 2 Mindsingers? Maybe -2 Tidebinders for +2 Mindsingers?
when you have an empty hand and are attacking with copter, is there any reason to still do the loot?
Clearly a pump and dump for tidebinder mage.
What do you mean about the lock pilgrimage + Hexcatcher + kumena or copter?
Pity the vigilance on Sentinel is bit of a nonbo with Pilgramage.
Thank you, Johnathan Zaczek. Haven't "Favorited" a video on Youtube in awhile. I'll eventually buy this list and wreak havoc on some local Pioneer events. I'm currently 4-2-1 at my LGS's Weekly Legacy events with MTGO Felipe_Gon's Legacy Merfolk list, as seen on mtggoldfish. I would really like to see you play some Legacy Merfolk someday and give those Bowmasters hell (and show me a better 75). Love all the gameplay videos. I'll donate next time you livestream. Peace!
There is a combo deck that uses kumenna along with pilgrimage to draw your whole deck and then play hanas orical
It plays 2 players of the 2 merfolk that can tap to untap another permanent, it also plays soul cauldron. This lets you make infinite tokens and with kumena you just win on the spot. Tidebinder also lets you have infinite counters
I forgot to go over the "combo" where you can use 2x Kiora's Follower with Deeproot Pilgrimage for infinite tokens. The combo is incredibly situational (good luck naturally drawing both Followers) and doesn't win on the spot either; both followers can't have summoning sickness and then your hexproof tokens will have summoning sickness. There's other combos that use Agatha's Soul Cauldron, and while there were some successfully published lists, I still think it's very convoluted and none of the lists could replicate wins at a competitive level online; many people tried. Overall, I don't like playing the combo version because it forces you to play cards that are very bad individually and won't combo reliably even when you can get it going.
This kind of deep analysis is really useful, thank you.
