Philippines drug war: Duterte investigated for crimes against humanity

The Justice Department in the Philippines says it’s begun investigating former President Rodrigo Duterte for crimes against humanity.

The government rejected a similar probe into Duterte’s anti-drugs campaign by the International Criminal Court.

But it now says testimonies in Congressional hearings, as well as Duterte’s own admissions, are too damning to ignore.

Al Jazeera’s Barnaby Lo has this report from the capital Manila.

  1. Duterte legacy "war on Drugs" is absolutely useful it's brings the illegal drug user and drug pusher to change from paranoid to a normal citizen. In the time of Duterte you can walk in the street even at night without fear it is because of his legacy.

  2. Now in Marcos time illegal drugs user and pusher really back. A normal citizen have fear about this situation. It brings higher rate of crimes, rapes, thief usually. We are normal citizen and have fear about the neglect of war on Drugs.

  11. I as a Filipino will attest that what our ex President did is necessary, i am a witness on how drugs can easily be bought and sold on the streets like a piece of candy… The great majority of Filipinos would wish for him to come back!!!

Oh yeah because the present administration the innocent people are dying because of the unstoppable spreading of drugs and addicts after duterte administration,Al jazeera doesn’t understand what going on in our country.If duterte didn’t become a president at time maybe we are already drowned by drugs,it’s difficult to explain if you are not the one get involved or victims of those drug addicts they won’t be cured!If you do surveys in a slump area or road then you will understand the truth!

  15. Duterte was the best president, as we felt safe during his administration. Before his term, crime rates were significantly lower, and drug addicts were too afraid to act openly. Now, under the Marcos administration, drug addicts and criminals seem emboldened and unafraid. Those who criticize Duterte focus solely on human rights, but Duterte prioritized protecting human lives. Instead of defending criminals, we should protect the innocent victims who have suffered from drug addicts, massacres, rapes, and other violent crimes.

  16. Present president r involve in all illegal activities in Philippines suck as drug trafficking, kidnapping, user of cocaine n corruption. The video of him using drugs is everywhere. But his manipulating d justice system, men in uniform n other politician. He is d Philippines National problem. And d 32 M voters of Duterte wants him to step down..
