Peterbilt 359 Restoration Ep.96 Montana Big Sky Blue

#littlebylittle359 #projectporkchop #snowmanspeedshop

This week I finally found the color that LBL is going to be … spending some time with the experts at CMax, I decided it was time to graduate to painting base/clear and by doing so, many more options opened up as a result including being able to add in pearls and metallics. I didn’t find it any harder painting the door panel, it just takes more coats and more time. Can’t wait to put what I’m expecting to be at least 10 on the truck before it’s all said and done – enjoy!

  1. Mark, watch Team STEAM’s most recent video about single stage paints vs base/clear on big trucks. You might want to reach out to him about helping you getting the color you want with a single stage. Guy knows his stuff about painting trucks.

  2. I started watching you build L/L in the snow outside. That blue is going to look great. I think if you sprayed that panel with it hanging you would have less sputtering from the spray can. Easier to get a even layer than bending over it. Nice result though.

  3. You are a working fiend …. makes my arthritic fingers hurt just watching all the work you do … much respect for your work ethic. I found in my career, I love to drive 'em more than I do workin' on 'em …… LOL …. luv your videos !!!

  4. Hey Mark, use red scotch bright by hand and it will make those rivets look beautiful all over the truck. What I usually do is I put Scotch bread on my sander and I go over the whole darn thing and it just levels everything out super nice and then when you prime it block sand everything by hand and then take the red Scotch-Brite and Scotch-Brite tow truck by hand your paint will come out beautiful

  5. You know, I've NEVER seen a professional use the fibreglass strand body filler. I only ever see it used on YouTube. I used it to bridge some rust holes when I was a kot younger because it sounded like a great idea. I wonder if other people think the same but the professionals know better?

  6. Hey Mark, agreed, thats the colour! …couple of suggestions if it's not too late .. next time you drop the stink bomb in the truck, have it running and the vent fans on to circulate the air around the cab … i know it's not often you paint on the ground but if you paint towards you then it's less likely you will drop crap in fresh paint or hit fresh paint with can/ jacket and finaly if it's possable how about splitting your work area up , put the truck in with the trans am, remove the hood and split the garage area in 2, hood in 1 section sleeper in the other screened off with plastic, then you can work on different areas of the truck at different speeds, while one area is drying you could be preping/painting a different section… looking forward to the next one bud, keep at it. Mike

  7. Mark, I've have many base paint jobs. I recommend that you do the base just enough to cover. If you put much on it, it will pull shine out of the clear. And if you wait more than 24 hours on the base, you have to scuff it. And the scratches might show. Especially with metallic. On the clear I recommend to put on at least 4 coats to wet sand and buff it. I'm only am recommending. I've have made many mistakes. The base, you want to overlap 1/2 the spray pattern. If you overlap more than that, you can end up with stripes. You'll have wait at least an hour to to put next coat on. You have been doing an AWESOME JOB with all projects!!!

  8. I was always told you have to spray clear while the paint is tacky because theres a chemical reaction type deal that happens and makes it stick better. Im not a painter but it might be worth asking a painter if you can wait a week between color and clear. Just a thought

  9. Have you considered taking the hood off and painting it separately? Paint the inside first, separately, then paint the exterior when you paint the truck, or paint the whole thing separately and leave outside when you paint the truck.
Definitely take the rear 1/2 fenders off.

You can’t let the base coat sit for a week without clear, you have 12-24 hours and you have to apply clear coat.

Painting path- cab roof, windshield and cowl, then the sides, then the back. Use same path for the sleeper finishing on the front. Make sure you use a tack cloth before starting a section.

  10. I would certainly be careful about putting too much bass coat on be careful and precious because you might get stand up on the metallic flake
The paint layers you put on the more you have it all splintering off if you were to get a stone chip

  11. Mark you should just get it painted professionally. I know your trying you best. But its a skilled art. Plus its a lot of money to waste if it doesn't come out the way you want it. A professional spray shop would give you peace of mind knowing you'll get a perfect spray job. Just food for thought buddy.

  12. Hey mark the best way i find for me is to take the bonnet off and the bunk to paint. Like i said i find it the best was for me plus i have half a dozen workers to help get them off and put back on so maybe won’t work for you. Anything other advise i have has already been said. Ya don’t need metallic paint just put the flakes in the clear for 1 coat and don’t base coat 1 saturday and clear coat the next it’s way to long. Can’t wait to see it finished i’ve been following the journey from the start.
All the best with it mate following the channel from Australia.

  13. Lay it on wet that will help you with your over lap . I used a siphon gun for years and put two ball berrings in the cup to keep the flake mixed up . And if your gonna spray flake ground the truck . Lay a chain over the axle. Unplug the battery’s also. Keep jamming Mark!

  14. Hey mark just a little information when you finish coming across at each end give your twisted a flick at the end that way you don’t get runs when to stop . No extra paint at the end of your stoke just saying keep up the great work love your videos cheers .

  15. Mark I the chanel, I'm spray painter in auto body industry. I think you should paint the bunk separately one weekend and then mask it up and do the rest. Little by little. Will make it easier on your body and you drag your hose on the cab.
