Pentagon tracks suspected Chinese spy balloon over US I DW News

The Pentagon is tracking a suspected spy balloon as it flies over the western United States, officials said Thursday. The Pentagon says it suspects it is Chinese, but has not confirmed its origin. The balloon has been flying over US skies for a few days now.

A US defense official said the balloon — spotted over Montana — has a flight path that would carry it over several sensitive sites but did not provide specific details. Montana is home to one of three US nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base.

China has warned against speculation and what it calls “hype” until the facts are established.

  1. The upper limit of national airspace is not defined by international law. According to Wikipedia, an altitude of between 60 and 110 km is normally assumed as the airspace upper limit for the sovereign territory. When the U2 was still regularly conducting espionage flights, it was actually defined by the Russian air defense systems 😉 🙂 Re-entry vehicles from space have to cope with massive friction from about 120 km.
A lot of things (like Russia's border transgression) should finally be regulated at the UN by international agreement… So I'd suggest to meet there half way and talk finally about the limitation of UN-SC member's veto rights and the reduction of the quorum for a peace keeping mission to a 2/3 majority !

  2. China has NOT officially admitted that the balloon belongs to them, only the western media keep claiming that it is a Chinese balloon. I did see CGTN video yesterday that they are investigating so don't jump to conclusion but for some reason it no longer exists, obviously taken down. Using common sense it's hard to believe that a balloon can stray 12000 km without being detected.

  3. I call bull. The Pentagon probably planted this. How can a punitive balloon fly from China all the way to Montana? And what can a balloon capture that China's satellites and more stable SIGINT assets can't? This is the USS Maine all over again.

  4. The only LOGICAL reason that the US has not shot the Chinese Dragon Egg Airship down is that the US wants to attempt a full recovery of the equipment over WATER. That is a sea recovery!

  5. Anyone who's making fun of the folks who believe it's a UFO should take a moment to check themselves before continuing with their dismissal of the claims made by "conspiracy theorists"…
