Pediatric Sickle Cell Patient on ECMO Beats the Flu and the Odds



A young sickle cell patient’s fight against the flu took nearly three months and included several medical procedures to complete the healing process, including ECMO, a highly advanced artificial life-support system that takes over circulatory and respiratory functions. At the time of his discharge from Medical City Children’s Hospital, Ethan Zeno displayed the strength to walk out of the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) to the cheers of his care team.
