‘Part of country life for decades’: Toyota axes LandCruiser 70 Series V8

Sky News host Caleb Bond says Toyota joins the green movement as it axes the LandCruiser 70 Series V8 model.

“Anyone who knows anything about off-roading or who has spent any time in the bush will know the popularity of the 70 Series Landcruiser,” Mr Bond said.

“It has been a somewhat ubiquitous part of country Australian life for decades … Toyota has decided to go soft in the name of the environment … why are they dumping such a wildly popular product? Well, ‘community expectations’ apparently.”

  1. Tyrannical government coupled with honorless auto manufacturers that want to strip you of what you want or need to survive in the name of some fake climate crisis made up by hippies in the 1970s and have yet to be right about any of their “predictions” (aka scare tactics)

  2. The axing of the V8 was one of the worst kept secrets going around in automotive
circles. The 2.8L 70 series has more torque, better economy and better performance than the V8 off the shelf. That’s the reality.

  3. I do love the v8s alot but man the new 79's pull hard and a wicked offroad, they just dont sound awesome like the v8s. Kind of feel like old mate here is being slightly disingenuous with this yarn just to get old boys wound up about someo tree hugger turning the utes gay or something.

  4. BAHAAH When a political pundits pushing a political agenda start talking about engines, cars and trucks it's hilarious. Caleb you have no clue what you talking about. That V8 Turbo DIESEL engine is not tough and does not have much grunt & power. The fact it's a V8 + DIESEL is the massive red flag how weak it is. Not exactly the best too for the job. That engine IS SOFT.

  5. Sales:
    90% = V8
    10% = 1HZ (detuned, 60% of the power)

This sales comparison would be more relevant if they sold the 2.8L for a few more years before dropping the V8. The new 2.8L literally performs better, it’s just not as repairable or noisy. Long term, most fleets will want an auto box and better fuel economy, Toyota know what they’re doing, and I don’t think it’s a “reducing emissions” decision.

  6. Ridiculous lazy journalism. Suggesting that because a V8 makes up most of the sales is proof that this is what people wants …. People that spoke to Henry Ford owned a lot of horses.
The toughness is no less present in the new 2.8l engine variant as has been demonstrated by many die hard owners via their YouTube reviews etc. in fact the V8 out towed and performed the V8 in all testing except for low range, 1st speed crawl due to lower engine compression. Toyota have been dominating for many decades and I don’t think they are about to put a foot wrong now.
