  1. The pistons in the new 2.8l must be steel to take those hi temps. Alu melts @ 660C and begins to slump before that.
When EGT B1S1 gets well over 500C I'm guessing the DPF could be doing passive burns.
You mite see that if you display DPF saturation % (though the algorithm's DPF % calculation is non linear).
When under load and in Drive your ATF temp in the torque converter at 80-90C is mild. My 2018 GXL Prado ATF TC temp can get over 120C under-load on the open highway.
These days I drive in S4 when the temp hits 110C. That gets the temp down to mid 90s – low 100C. I also replace the ATF at the recommended "Additional Maintenance" rate.
I'm mulling over replacing the ATF even more frequently as the condition of the old fluid after 80Kkms was marginal.

  2. Another awesome video mate. So glad you covered the part about EGTs. I was out central QLD last weekend, temperature was around 39 degrees & my 76 series 2.8 did a DPF burn & the scangauge 3 said my EGT was 790 degrees. I nearly shit my self. Looked down & it was doing a DPF burn, they definitely get hot when they burn. After the burn back down to the 300s.

  3. Some great info on the differences from earlier 1GD’s. In your commentary you mention ‘ that’s the cooler doing its job’ (ATF). Does the 1GD in the ‘79 have a factory cooler or have you added one ?

  4. Good info mate. 👍 Q. Do you find you need to switch to manual mode when towing on the hills? The box doesn't seem to want to change down in time or up for that matter, seems to labour the engine. Also, have you found there's an issue with pwr haul when coming off the highway into towns. I need to turn it off as the box isn't changing down quick enough when coming to a stop, it's like it's about to stall, you can't accelerate until it sorts itself out and finally drops back to 2nd gear. It's all over the shop.

  5. Enjoying the vids. It's turning out to be a great vehicle by the looks. How did you acquire the detailed info on the engine and box upgrades? Pretty extensive list, seems like you have a good source deep inside Toyota. 😉

  6. Ive got your number plate. Im not buying this car if you sell it. You have totally trashed this 4 banger.
You have stressed it too much.
You went to the otherside and F off your V8. You deserve to be left in the desert stranded with 20L of water just enough for a helicopter to get you out of the desert. Good luck with your 4 banger

  7. Great info in these vids, there's the other engine builder bloke from the GC on youtube who has this motor and the V8 next to each other on the bench and shows why the 4cyl is superior. Exhaust ports on the V8 are the size of 10c pieces.
