LYRICS
Stare at a wall that’s told a thousand tragedies
Holding a hand that’s loved every part of me
A lady comes and tells me that I gotta leave
Right away everybody is the enemy
Deep breaths from the room where I watch you lie
Any beat from your heart gets me through the night
You’re my love, you’re my death, you’re my alibi
Say this isn’t goodbye

Who’s gonna drive me home tonight?
Who’s gonna argue ’til they win the fight?
You’re the only one that knows how to operate
My heavy machinery

Don’t let the light go out…

A rush of blood floods hot thoughts in my head
Red roses sitting silently beside the bed
Are saying more right now than I ever said
Don’t wanna live if the thought of loving you is dead

Who’s gonna drive me home tonight?
Who’s gonna argue ’til they win the fight?
You’re the only one that knows how to operate
My heavy machinery, so…
Who’s gonna drive me home tonight?
Who’s gonna argue ’til they win the fight?
You’re the only one that knows how to operate
My heavy machinery

Don’t let the light go out…

  1. This track is honestly such an amazing and fantastic banger that is 100% the best off of Panic!'s "Viva Las Vengeance" Album. Brendon's vocals on here we're a bit fucked tho I will admit that but still besides from the vocals on the chorus and some of the lyrics, the entire track is so fucking enjoyable and like I said its the best track off of Viva Las Vengeance.

  2. #VivaLasVengeance reminds me of the play about Green Day called American idiot, VLV could be like that because the whole album sounds theatrical, I could definitely see someone belting out these songs on stage in a play production

The whole album is giving me grease, Shakespeare, rock I LOVE IT

  4. My read on this is that the singer (Brendon) is in a hospital watching his partner likely losing a fight for their life. There is a heartbeat motif all over the place – the steady drum beat in the "Don't let the light go out", the lights on the front of the car looking like a heartbeat monitor.

He gets angry when he is told the leave the (hospital) room (or possibly an operating theatre) by a lady (a nurse). He notes that there are flowers that have been sent by presumably others sitting beside his partners bed but they are untouched – his partner is likely in a coma at best.

The song is a lament that Brendon is genuinely uncertain about whether or not the person they are with will die and he is struggling to cope. We know Brendon can hit the high notes but he doesn't always – in this song he seems to very deliberately belt out high notes in the chorus. It's almost as if he is wailing to the heavens because he simply cannot hold all the pain, grief, and anxiety in.

In the end the best he can really manage is a mantra that is both a prayer and an attempt to keep himself together: "Don't let the light go out"
