Pancakes & Nick Drake (Thoughts on Collection Organization & Consolidation)

In between a pancake breakfast and a discussion about Nick Drake with my wife, I shot this video. Thoughts on record collecting, organization, and consolidation.

  1. Hey Tim, my wife is from the UK, so she is very familiar with Nick Drake. She says she has a copy from the 1970s of Bryter Layter in England stored in her brothers attic. I wonder if I will ever get it.

  2. I love Nick Drake, I have Fruit Tree along with a 1976 UK Five Leaves Left, and 1972 UK pressings of Bryter Layter and Pink Moon among many others in my collection. Still hoping for original pressings of the first two albums, but the cost is hard for me to justify.

  3. I bought that 1979 version a couple years ago after looking at the available options and thinking it was unlikely I'd find a clean (and you want clean copies of these) 70's reissue of just Pink Moon for the same price as the whole box.

  4. I was lucky enough to find a 1st press US NM/NM of Pink Moon at a record store for $70 a few years ago. It is still in the shrink so I have not been able to open the gatefold. But it sounds fantastic. Dead quiet!

Don’t think the owner had heard of Nick Drake and it looked so good that it just seemed like a reissue. Not sure how he came up with that price though

  5. I bought this same set not long after it was first released. Now that I've just embarked on the slow process of divesting my collection I had already decided this is one of the few that I will keep. Nice seeing you feature this lovely gem, Tim

  6. Heh, you did it again Tim… Not to be a Pooper, but I'm not really a Nick Drake fan, or TBH of many other vocally oriented artists that I know you are very passionate about. But… still… your presentation is always so engaging that I still really enjoyed it (the pancake story certainly didn't hurt) All I can share that is slightly tangential to what you were talking about is that just the last couple of weeks I happened to stumble across the fact that I have 2 copies of two 1st US pressings of New Order, Substance and Low Life. One I didn't realize because I had cataloged one under New Wave, and another duplicate under Synth Rock. Go figure…

So, I did a quick comparison between pressings. For both I had a Club pressing and an Arc pressing. In both cases the Arc pressing blew away the Club pressings soundwise. So, still, I guess especially Substance since I don't think it's been repressed is apparently going for over $100 on Discogs, and my copies were both NM since I probably bought them when they came out and I haven't listened to them probably in over 25 years. So, I sold both of the Club pressings on the Steve Hoffman Forums, which was nice. But, I don't know why, you likely do, but those Arc pressings REALLY sounded amazing, far more punchy and dynamic than these particular Club pressings.

  7. This is a great video Tim. I'm a CD person and simply wanted to mention a superb Nick Drake box set that came out in 2013 titled 'Tuck Box' that includes remastered discs of the three classic Drake albums in decent cardboard sleeves along with a good amount of bonus material from an artist whose original catalogue was so small. It is great you are featuring wonderful artists like Nick Drake on your channel!

  8. I’ve got the original UK release of that Nick Drake box set. Given to me by a friend. Knew about Nick before I got this, but hadn’t really listened to his music. Now one of my favorites. I agree, it would have been nice if they had used the original covers. Thanks for sharing.

  9. Tim covers stuff that you don't typically run into elsewhere in the youtube vinyl community – love it! I have the 1986 edition of the 'Fruit Tree' box that kept Pink Moon as the original running order and collected 13 extra tracks on a 4th LP. I have never been able to get the straight story on whether it is AAA or AAD (no one seems to know for sure on Discogs, SHF, etc.) For my part, I think the recent (still in print) Sean Magee cuts of the three albums (with Five Leaves Left digital) improve on the 1986 'Fruit Tree' box…. Great video, Tim!

  11. So I just moved to Denver, my wife and all of the household stuff moves mid April. I have been eating Original Pancake House for many years so I was so excited to hear they are in Denver and my kids go there! Life is good. I had that Drake box set, loved it. I did save the vinyl after the flood

  12. That Fruit Tree is the “Secret weapon” of collecting Nick Drake. Although the word is basically out on them now. FWIW, the 1986 version recreates the album art, but the “sleeves” are more like inner sleeves than jackets. I’ll probably never have a clean Pink Rim, but I can’t imagine them sounding THAT much better than fruit tree.
