Panasonic cameras: The good and the bad

Chris and Jordan have primarily been using Panasonic cameras to shoot DPReview TV for years, but they still have some criticisms. What is Panasonic getting right and wrong with their camera lineup? Chris and Jordan have some thoughts.

  1. I agree. I've been waiting and waiting, and in the waiting time bought a Sony RX100, got older, now, maybe the mobile phone is more value for the money, especially as a travel camera 🤣😉

  2. One of the worst shit panasonic did was NOT DISPLAYING CURRENT KELVIN TEMPERATURE especially in video mode when you auto white balance off white.Dropped the ball pretty hard. Also enabling uncopressed DNG over usb C to SSD would win them a lot of people, sigma fp does it.Its not patented by red.

  3. I love my G85 and G9 and picked up an S5 recently for photos and to help with low light video. I think I’ll pick up a GH6 in the future just not looking forward to the expensive cards!

  4. Thanks for the honest chat. I'm glad I don't need to make a decision this year because I'd go for the best AF. Once you have the quality glass you're stuck unless money is no object. Which manufacturer will get it all together first? No one knows but I'm glad not tied in or a fanboy of any manufacturer yet.

  5. I have an S5 I only use for photos. I think it would be great if Panasonic offered an optional firmware update that stripped out the video functions, simplifying the menu. They could add photo features such as when you specify a vintage lens for the i.s. the focal length is recorded in the photo data. Or, they could offer firmware for video only.

  6. GF2 with PZ 14-42 & PZ 45-175 – just love it for taking photos while my dog has to wait for me… . Too bad there is no real successor to the form factor – don't want a grip and as left eye dominant I prefer an optional EVF.

  7. SONY on TOP! Jordan dont you agree? I used to use gh5 but SONY is WAY MORE advanced. Auto focus is THE BEST. Canon lenses are HUGE and the autofocus is clunky and loud. The worst for video. SONY IS ON TOP! I LOVE OUR FX3 and FX6!

  8. If shooting narrative shorts were the only need – as a solo shooter.
    What camera would you recommend?
Key features I need:

    Great autofocus
    Good low light
    10bit
    Image stabilization

60p slow motion
    Under $5K

    Thanks

  9. I've been using a G9 for three years and I'm very happy with it. Together with the 100-400mm lens you have a good and lightweight option for wildlife photography. Together with the 14-140mm lens this covers all my needs. I find the play of the bayonet annoying. The diopter wheel is very difficult to adjust. The lens hood of the 100-400mm is defective. I have yet to find an affordable lens hood to replace mine.

  10. Nice to see Jordan take the positive stance for once! For the price of Panasonic M43 cameras, they deliver great value and image quality. My use is primarily still photos. I wouldn't want a bigger FF system at this stage in my life. I have no problems focusing my G9, even on fast moving birds. You just need to learn how to set it up, and then spend the time practicing. Oh, and I also own the dreaded G100 but it's a great photo camera too, especially when matched with the 15mm f/1.7. Might try the 9mm next. Thanks guys!

  11. Yes, the lenses for L-Mount are great and all, but have you looked at the budget offers and regular prices? Leica being the holder of L-Mount has barred 3rd parties from producing decent or any AF lenses for it at all. Some manufacturers with manual lenses can work around those limitations but we'll likely never see a true budget line of 3rd party lenses for L-Mount. I'd be happy to stick a native Tamron or Samyang lens to an S5 if it meant getting good quality for a fair price. But we won't get this option, except for adapted DSLR lenses, anytime soon I guess.

Looking at the prices of the body's, except the S5, also makes me whince slightly. Sure, I can justify buying such a tool, but I think Panasonic really has no good budget line. Some GX cameras are, as you said, quite old by now and MFT becomes increasingly less justifyable with cameras like the A7c being equally small (not saying MFT is dead, I love MFT, but its positives are more and more negligible).
So I wonder, where is a S7 / S10 (stealing Canons names here) or a smaller S50 (like Fuji's X-T– line)? I'd love for them to make something I can suggest to beginners, people on a budget and or as a tool for schools and teachers.

  12. You forgot to mention how Panasonic really likes to put in arbitrary restrictions just to annoy their users. E.g., the hardware of the GM and GX models are perfectly capable of shooting video both at 25 fps and 30 fps, but Panasonic has artificially locked down the frame rate, according to where you buy the camera. (It's not as if people wouldn't ever travel to another country, or as if anyone from outside the US would want to upload 30 fps footage for YouTube or anything like that.)

  13. One can expect excellent video quality even under low light conditions in 4k in a hand-held shot without moving the camera using lumix G7. I think it is best to use some video stabilizing equipment while moving the camera as it doesn't have IBIS and results in shaky video. I don't have a gimbal of course.

  14. Hopefully we will see a GX10 with headphone and mic jack 3.5 and 4k non crop video mode, with a built in flash, weather sealing and twistable LCD screen and larger EVF in a M4/3 24 MP body. Panasonic are you listening!!!.
