GameSpot sat down with game director Aaron Keller to discuss Blizzard’s new approach to Overwatch 2, which builds upon its predecessor to become a free-to-play, live-service game.

00:40 – What’s the mood of the team all these years into development and coming off the alpha?
01:34 – What were your key objectives for Overwatch 2, and have they changed now the game is quite different?
02:36 – How do you think of Overwatch 2, given that you’ve presented it in a way that is now different from the initial pitch?
05:25 – How did the shift in vision and going free-to-play impact development and how did the Overwatch team adjust?
06:27 – Are there plans to change how you’re going to be communicating with the community?
07:42 – You mentioned the cosmetics and new things coming to the store. Can you talk about the decision to lose loot boxes?
08:37 – For a lot of people the loot boxes were the proverbial carrot on the stick. What becomes that now for players?
09:03 – There’s also Mythic skins. How are they going to work?
10:04 – What’s the rollout of these going to be?
10:15 – Speaking of the new heroes, can you talk about Junker Queen?
12:03 – How feasible is a new hero every two seasons from a design, development, and production perspective and are you locked into [that timing]?
13:04 – The introduction of a new hero every two seasons also has major implications on the metagame. Are you pre-planning meta changes as well as pre-planning new characters?
14:26 – So the first roadmap is going to be for a year. How long internally have you planned out for?
15:32 – Is there any scope for creating some sort of system where large groups and Overwatch friend circles will be able to still play together?
17:19 – For many PvP and PvE to thee was the complete package for Overwatch 2. Can you talk about the decision to decouple them?
18:48 – You showed off a new origin story and cinematic. Now that you have a PvE component, are we going to be seeing more stuff like that within the PvE?
20:09 – Can you tell us about the new map coming in the beta?
22:53 – There’s the cadence for hero release. Is there any sort of cadence with regard to adding new maps or even new modes to the game?
23:36 – Overwatch as a game is being developed by Blizzard, which is owned by Activision Blizzard, and there are things that are happening within the industry that are [then] associated with the team, and the conversation that needs to happen for people like us who love Overwatch and are so excited is how do we reconcile that excitement with what is going on with the parent company? So we have to try and ask for a transparent look at what the Overwatch development team is currently like.

Great stuff! I love how he stopped himself from saying Junker Queen out of habit, only to realise they had finally revealed her haha
says theyre removing cc but both of the new heros have cc
it honestly sounds like Blizzard made this video….it doesn't sound like questions anyone would actually ask….HOW OFTEN ARE YOU RELEASING THOSE MYTHIC SKINS?! OH MY GOD TATTOOS!!!
promised so much, delivering so little
great interview – I think Aaron himself seemed a little awkward in some of the scripted interviews, he seems much more comfortable in a real interview setting. love the direction he's taking the game though
I really like how this interview was conducted, great information
I’ll just cancel GamePass & save my $180/year for Overwatch content.
I respect Aaron he seems like a legit person
The last answer was very interesting to me. It’s one of the few times we get to see how a member of the Overwatch team feels about the horrible things going on in Blizzard. Keep in mind that interviews like these are under very strict control from higher-ups, which is one of the rumoured reasons Jeff left.
Aaron gives me the impression that he really wants to speak about it in some way or another, it sounds like he’s close to choking up a little, but can only discuss things in very vague terms so he doesn’t get fired. I don’t know what his opinions on this are, but with his talk about wanting to make a bright shiny future, even in the face of struggle, I am hopeful. Cautious of course, but hopeful that this man can lead his team to be better.
I hope they make ranked easier. I’m not that bad but it’s so heavy on everyone doing there job for you to win.
I'm happy about this , the core structure of the game needed to be fixed and on top of that there's a lot of added content regardless of what people currently think. Obviously I'm cautiously optimistic but they are actually listening it seems so I'll give them that!
So is competitive pointless to play now? Since everything is resetting?
Aaron seems like a really cool guy who has a lot of love for this game. Huge props to him for stepping up after Jeff left and all the harassment/lawsuit stuff came out. He's worked really hard to turn this sinking ship around instead of just abandoning it, and I commend him for that
Will Heroes be in the paid Battlepass?!
Will Content be in the paid Battlelass?!
Will content be gated behind the Paid Battlepass?!
"WE HAVE SEVERAL ANIMATED SHORTS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON" LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
6:27 so glad they acknowledge this. Overwatch is a game that I've invested so much of my life in, I've been playing it for 6 years and to see the devs just disappear and stop updating the game or communicating with us honestly felt awful. I'm glad they acknowledge that players don't just want a superficial level of communication, and that that's a reasonable expectation from players who see Overwatch as a core part of who they are.
So much better than the PR reveal a few days ago
nice
He says um a lot
Great interview. I like this guys demeanor
he strangely sounds like Jeff
with no CC support are dead , free food for the dps flank.
