Over 55,000 Canadian postal workers go on strike

About 55,000 Canada Post workers are on strike nationwide as of 12:01 a.m. Friday, after failing to reach an agreement with their employer.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says little progress has been made after nearly a year of bargaining.

The union issued their 72 hour strike notice earlier this week, putting pressure on for a deal to be reached.

The strike comes at a crucial time with holiday shipments beginning to ramp up and was described by the union as a β€œlast resort.”

The local postal worker’s union president Tracey Langille told CHCH News that the parties are still in negotiations.

The main sticking points revolve around wage increases, safe working conditions, pensions and expansion of post office services.

β€œCanada Post is at a critical juncture, losing $3 Billion since 2018 with losses continuing to mount,” the corporation told CHCH News. β€œWe’ve offered competitive wage increases – 11.5 per cent over four years – and additional paid leave, while protecting their defined benefit pension and job security provisions.”

Canada Post says that the national operations shut down will affect millions of Canadians and businesses across the country.

This strike is similar to the strike that last occurred in 2018, where rotating strikes across the country disrupted but did not stop all delivery services.

Mail and packages will not be delivered for the duration of the strike and some offices will be closed.

The retail council of Canada says that many businesses who rely on Canada Post have already switched to different suppliers in anticipation of a strike, which will likely drive up costs.

The union representing Purolator says that its members will respect the picket line and not handle packages that originated from Canada Post.

  2. The average consumer is still dealing with inflationary prices, diminished product quality, and reduced service levels. Any of these unions like the Port workers or Postal workers that leverage supply chain pressures or seasonal consumer demand to enrich themselves at the expense of the average Canadian, well, they are in effect tarnishing the values and principles of unionism, and they are turning Canadians against unions.

  3. No kidding the customer is always gonna pay regardless try sending a package yesterday through UPS because it’s going into a rural area. They were going to charge me over $200. I said no I’m not paying that to send that package yet when I go to Canada Post. I can buy a prepackaged box as long as it doesn’t exceed over 5 kg. I can send it for $34 and a few cents.

  4. When your employer is losing Extinction,000 million dollars a year, you might not want to hit him for a raise,
Let the carriers stand around and do nothing. Thats their forte anyway. Ugh! Canada Post is heading the way of Pony Express…..Extinction!

  6. The top heavy highly paid management team at Canada Post are only trying to stay relevant for their non-jobs , so the real workiing Postal workers are getting the short end of the stick to deflect from an audit and redo of the postal system in it's current outdated form . The strike benefits management to fund their bloated salaries .

  7. Canada Post πŸ“« is the most expensive and slowest to ship !
DHL , Purolator , FedEx , and UPS are all cheaper and faster to ship …..
The way Canada is operating is not sustainable , Government is aware of this too .
It's operating on borrowed time ….

  8. They are already overpaid, wild benefits and job security. Compare this to how small business struggle. Compare their fat packages to what private citizens earn for similar work. Entitled and selfish people.

  9. All the letter couriers do is deliver "delivery notices" and i need to pick it up myself. Oh, but they're always nice enough to fill my mailbox with junk coupons. CPost should fire all letter couriers. They dont deliver anything anyways.
