‘Out of order!’ Chris Sutton slams Paul Heckingbottom for referee criticism after Spurs loss | IAKO

Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom launched a furious tirade at Premier League referees, claiming the officials told him to ‘play long’ rather than let goalkeeper Wes Foderingham take his time to pass out from the back. Referee Peter Bankes flourished 13 yellow cards as the Blades lost late at Tottenham, seven for Heckingbottom’s team including two for Ollie McBurnie, who was dismissed in the 14th minute of added time and will be banned for the next game, against Newcastle. ‘Something needs to be done now,’ fumed Heckingbottom. ‘The referees are killing the game, absolutely ruining it. This is not me moaning about the result. I said it at half-time and when we were 1-0 up as well.’

  1. Twice Foderingham feigned injury, to the point whereby the reserve was preparing as he removed his gloves & dragged it out all he could it was shameless. Last season his cheating might've won SU the game, this season he lost them the game, he knows the new rules too….

  2. Was frustrated watching the shenanigans of Sheffield players with staying down and wasting time and low and behold not a sign of cramp or staying down after Spurs scored. Time added was justified 100%.

  3. If the goalkeeper can take as much time as they want to "make a decision" then the goalkeeper can time waste infinitely as they can just claim they're "making a decision".
I thought Sheffield played really well – Robinson was immense – but the time wasting by the keeper was ridiculous, and the "cramps" at the 60 minute mark from other players too.
Then there's the added time… play stupid games, get stupid prizes. Was anyone genuinely surprised that there was 10+ minutes?

  4. When teams realise they can no longer time waste, they'll stop doing it. When it costs more than its worth. For every second you waste, they add on two. It will stop within a couple weeks.

  5. Sheffield United tactics destroyed the game in the first place. Cannot blame them they have only one point. The referee would be better suited to the Vanarama league. Its a difficult job but he failed on Saturday.. He failed to add enough extra time on at the end of the first half. As he was not strong enough to send the GK off with a second yellow he did the next best thing. 13 minutes extra

  6. The ref bottled sending the GK off as if he hasn’t booked GK for handball outside area he def would’ve booked him for times wasting so was lucky weren’t down to 10 men for most of match

  7. Heckingbum is anti-football, disgraceful display from his team. He gave them the tactics and told them how to play to waste time and try and hang on to a sucker punch, so don't blame the referee. The ref actually was soft on them, they should have been penalised a lot more than they were and should have given Spurs a couple of penalties, especially when Madders was hacked down from behind. Sour grapes from a retarded anti-football coach.

  8. Sheff Utd should sack Heckingbottom cause he will make their club stay bottom as they didn’t play football at my club Spurs they were disgraceful the way they tried to ruin the game with their deliberate time wasting and Shithousery.

  9. It seems to me the timewasting by Sheffield players is what "ruined the game", an otherwise brilliant match interrupted continually in an attempt to stop the Spurs momentum so often they must have been following the "game plan".

  10. If you follow his logic, if the opposition keep closing down his players at a goal kick then he believes his keeper can hold the ball for up to 45 minutes until a player becomes free to pass to.

  11. Hopefully this gets rid of time wasting because logically you are more tired defending at 98 minutes than at 68 minutes, so if a fair amount of time is added on, your team will be worse off.

  12. The should have been more than 12 mins added Sheffield United time wasted from the 10th minute of the game!!!! I hope they go down, if the ref had the balls he would have sent the keeper off he was on a yellow after he handled the ball outside the area and then went on to time waste every chance he got

  13. Heckingbottom atroscious comments. Refs have a tough time largely because of the appaling behaviour of the players on the pitch, in this instance the insulting level of time wasting by Heckingbottom's team.

  14. The London keeper was taking longer to release the ball than the Sheffield keeper. It seems every time a keeper had the ball it was added as extra time, so that would mean a minimum of 10 minutes of added time every game, so why does't this happen? It's seems officials never apply consistency, altho admit it's difficult and an almost impossible task.

  15. Found it hilarious/ weird how London were celebrating like they'd won the Champions League after the match, it's this fans mentality that makes it a small time club. Wonder if it's because London always lose at Bramall Lane, anyone remember the Blades 7 Spurs 0 game when you had Sherringham, Sicknote and Cundy? Even as recently as last year knocked out of the cup by a SU reserves side who rested most of our 1st team players.

  16. I absolutely totally agree . The referees have for to long been held as holier than thou , all knowing . They are overpaid narcissists, who have not actually played the game to any significant level in any part of their lives , unless someone knows of an exception , I don’t . You could pay them a lot less and have the same standards .Some time ago I looked at the previous jobs that so called professional referees had . A lot of ex Police , Prison officers , or other similar positions at that time . A simple question , why don’t ex footballers get refereeing jobs ? Is there a reason , at least they had previous talent , and a better understanding of actually playing .I have zero sympathy for referees .

  17. Heckingbottom just showing his lack of understanding of referee's. No red card for SU keeper, time waisting etc etc. Strange how he didn't bemoan the decisions that helped them. Proper muppet.

  18. And what about all players going down feigning injury, and wasting time.
I've said it for years, if a player goes down, and stops play, then take them off for 5 mins, if that doesn't work, make it 10 mins, we call it recovery time.
    The penny will soon drop.

  19. Fan of the pod, but Chris is insufferable sometimes. Seems to struggle to grasp simple things Ian is saying, especially the part about chelsea not having a connection with the fans currently . Sometimes it’s hard to believe he played the game at the highest level.

  20. Spurs had 6 bookings in the game same as Sheffield United as well as there fans throwing balls on the pitch to add more time at the end of 90mins but yes all sheff Utds fault. Cheating spurs as always I will enjoy your hammering as well as your excuses when arsenal do you in at the weekend
