  1. 2:15 Grant is best when used as sparingly as possible, the director and writers knew how to min-max him, Savina doesn’t need to be complex in this film, she’s allowed to just be a 2d evil character.

4.5/5 there’s room for improvement, but it doesn’t need much

  2. I liked the introductions. I thought the whole movie played out like a group of friends sitting around a table playing a campaign. I honestly can say it was a darn good movie. 7/10

  3. Great, fun movie! If the first 30ish minutes did not take time to establish characters, setting and plot, the critique would be that they rushed into everything without taking time to bring the viewers into the story. If the story was full of too many obscure easter eggs and references that only TTRPGers would understand, it would have been gatekeeping and lost the general audience. It was all well balanced. Hugh Grant plays his part perfectly – doing just enough to really sell his role, but not grab focus, and meshing nicely with the rest of the cast. Fair that the BBEG is a very generic villain…just like many villains at our own tables. I do think you're right, there really wasn't much for her to work with, but with potential franchise hints laced into the movie, she's not the true BBEG anyway (how many DMs saw that coming?). I'm nitpicking a bit, but you are absolutely right that overall this movie was a comedic thrill ride, the kind many D&D fans have been wanting for decades. It's not The Godfather, it's not LotR, and it really doesn't try to be. This movie is fully self-aware of what it really is: a perfect escapism popcorn flick to just sit back, laugh with, and enjoy.

  4. I really enjoyed it and I'll be going to see it again. There were many blink and you'll miss it references that the story didn't depend on, and it not only respected the setting but felt like it embraced it. There was one shot of the moon that included the Tears of Selune which any director unfamiliar with the lore likely would only use a moon. It was funny throughout and never in a tone of derision towards the absurdity the game lends itself towards.

  5. I had a huge problem with the third act. The final fight seemed a bit rushed to me and she turned people into “zombies” (the rich gambler dudes and staff)but they never come into play. I kept waiting for the zombies she did make to rush the group but they never do. They’re just off somewhere doing who knows what.
Overall I liked the film though
    I’d say 6.5-7.5/10 I can’t decide

  6. I found it pretty low impact .. didnt really feel so much like dnd .. I think "Your Highness" captured the feel better to tell the truth, and thats pretty well NOT dnd 🙂

  7. I wish your channel could find its charm and move past its stilted salty disposition over DND. I think the films incredible quality and masterful storytelling embarasses your channels continued slanted coverage of Hasbro and DND. I hope you guys either stop covering DND and cover your true love (every other TTRPG) or finally decide to get on board and give Hasbro and DND the credit it deserved (but that your channel continues to deny them).

  8. Best d&d movie I’ve seen. Fun, humorous, and action packed. It made this old school d&d player happy. I give it an 8 out of 10 which reduces down to 4 out of 5. 😂

  9. I don't watch movies in theaters more than once, and I expected to hate this movie.
I'm going to see it again next week. I came out of the theater grinning from ear to ear. I loved it.

  10. Crappy film, crappy CGI, crappy armour and weapons, crappy characters, crappy villains, horrible plot and really bad pace.
Its not D&D, its a 5E film so its superhéroes in Fantasy not Swords and Sorcery or heroica Fantasy.
All in all, a discount Guardians of the Galaxy Film with a least talented cast, laughable production values (the female Tiefling is a really bad Cosplay LOL) and forgetteable villains and plot.
A very weak popcorn flick that only shines because most of MCU and DCU films are even worst.
2/5. Don't waste your money in the cinema and sail the seas to watch It.

  11. There is supposed to be a Critical Role easter egg – one of Simon's "cantrips" is supposed to be called "Fresh Cut Grass" – it's probably reskinned Prestidigitation. So there may be more easter eggs than you realised…

  12. Early showing for Amazon Prime members – and it was solid movie, i was ok going into it if i just got to see cool magic special effects and monsters, but hoped i would truly enjoy it as a movie, and it went well… I agree took a bit to get going but i enjoyed this and hope there is more to come for movies and other vid options like Critical Roles Animated series which is doing great on Amazon!

  13. The "this is D&D" exposition dialog will annoy me too when I go to see it, but I am expecting it. It's there for everyone eho isn't already a D&D fan to have something to latch on to and I don't resent them for it, I will just eyeroll until it's over.

One thing I'm concerned about is that neither the bard nor the paladin will cast any spells, as they should, since they are both casters in TT. Especially the bard. If they make Elgin just a "minstrel" with no spellcasting ability I will be extremely disappointed.

  14. I saw it last Sunday during the Amazon sneak peek event
I thought it was a great representation of dungeons and dragons, and clearly the best movie ever for the franchise.
