There should be no doubt in anyone's mind- this was clearly a horrible war crime. It however did not occur in a vacuum. The maquis- basically communist partisans who murdered uniformed german soliders all through the occupation- had a spike in activity after the D-day landings. They captured and murdered the 2nd SS division's beloved regimental commander Dieckmann. This atrocity can be directly linked to that event. Innocent civilians usually suffer for their compatriots "resistance".
