ORA Funky Cat 2023 Review

This is the ORA Funky Cat!

It’s an all-new electric car from China, and Mat’s about to find out if it has what it takes to rival established brands such as MINI & VW in the small electric car category!

Upon first glance, you may be forgiven for thinking the car looks recognisable. For example, look at it from the rear and it looks similar to a Fiat 500, while from the front it looks pretty similar to the MINI Electric! Clearly the designers must have been influenced by the cars they’re going up against, but that’s not exactly a bad thing!

The inside is pretty well laid out as well. There are good quality materials across the dash and on the doors, and there are two decently sized screens to house the infotainment system and digital dials. They may not be the most intuitive systems, but they work well enough for the size of car.

One key selling point is the tech that comes inclusive! There’s only one trim level available for this car, so that means that things such as electronically controlled seats and 360 parking cameras come as standard.

The car is powered by a 48kWh battery pack along with a single electric motor. This can produce 171hp while it’s good for a claimed range of 193 miles. That’s well up on a MINI Electric, but a fair bit lower than the likes of a VW ID.3.

The ORA Funky Cat costs from £32,000. But does it offer enough to tempt you away from the more established competition? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

  1. I can’t get my head around British law. So you can’t use or touch your mobile phone while driving as it’s a distraction. But you can look and scroll through a touch screen to adjust a heater for example on a new car. Or you can search for a button to change driving modes. 🤔🤔

  2. I love the name Ora Funky Cat and I'm the blokiest of blokey blokes – former Royal Marine, construction management degree, downhill mountain biker, real ale, rugby, unusually hairy arse and my party piece at the pub after a rugger match.

  3. Just hired an ORA for a few days. Looks amazing – and you get stares. Great flowing drive.
BUT some really annoying quirks –
    – sometimes the Indicators don't auto switch OFF and you can't get them OFF without indicating to the other side
    – as you cruise to a halt in traffic jams the Computer Lady will shout, "WARNING!! USE BRAKES!!"
    – it was built for China/USA grid systems not tight UK streets so the Screens keep flipping into Diagrams or Pictures of your road position (though you would never use these) and going down a One Way Street with cars either side you get a stupid diagram of all the parked cars. Why?
    – when you get to your destination the engine keeps running and keeps beeping if it thinks you have parked too close to another car – even when you are in neutral!!
I've just been driving around my City for a few hours and I now have aches and tension in my shoulders from all these stupid irritating quirks. Apart from that – its great.

  4. Every car review of chinese cars should come with a disclaimer that the software cannot be trusted and that all the data that it can collect will be available to chinese authorities at their will. This includes exact location, camera feeds, microphones, wifi networks, bluetooth devices and whatever data is shared from your phone if you have connected it. If you doubt that this is happening, consider that chinese authorities have banned teslas from different areas because they worry that teslas are spying on them. It should also be made perfectly clear that if the chinese state decides that a suicide function needs to be installed where they can press a button and cause every single chinese vehicle to apply full throttle and turn left as soon as a camera records oncoming traffic, they can actually do that. It is an insane proposition and I do not think it's on their todo-list but the point is that it is fully possible because there are no checks or balances to their power.

  5. Was curious about this car. I live in sweden where I think it was recently released. Here it’s called the ORA 300 Pro for some reason. I found some Swedish reviews too and realized I’d already seen yours review but I have to watch yours again because you do it fun and consistent and I trust you more. I guess spec wise they’re identical apart from left hand drive here.

  6. Watched your report up to the point of your childish actions, you really should realise there is a wider base looking for info on these cars than teens or twenty somethings!
The name is a poor choice though!
