  1. I love how they gave Mihawk such a sassy personality. He's the best and he knows it, and he's just looking for anything fun to escape the boredom. One minor difference is how they show Zoro's loss. In the manga; he turns around quickly and surprises Mihawk, who mid swing intending to cut Zoro down from behind without a care. In the show; Zoro slowly stands up and turns around to see Mihawk patiently waiting for him. While I think the manga portrayal is better for showing off Zoro's badass determination, the show version fits this Mihawk perfectly because he wants to see if Zoro has anything else interesting to show him.

  2. I read an interview with Taz Skylar and it's absolutely insane what he did to prepare for the role. He basically became a chef and a martial artist. He's probably my favorite actor out of the Strawhats. And yeah, they absolutely nailed Mihawk as well. Love his look and demeanor.

  3. 8:58 impression I got was he was feeling frustration/rage at Luffy’s defiance and a the familial pride of “did you see that?! My grandson just sent one if my canon balls back at us! I made him into one tough sonnovabitch!”

  4. I think my biggest complaint of this episode is that when Zoro was saying he’d never lose again, he didn’t have the “Is that alright, future king of the pirates?” It gets nowhere close to ruining the great episode but I really love that line in particular.

  5. What I didn't like with the changes is how the characters change because of them: Sanji leaving the Baratie is severely downplayed ("I didn't like this place and was close to leave anyway" vibes, also it went from best East Blue restaurant to "random steakhouse because Americans wouldn't relate otherwise"), Nami isn't believable for one second when she "betrays the crew", especially after what she says to Zoro, it hits because in the manga that could have, in fact, happened, Garp is too angry (especially when he destroys an office just because he was pissed, like wtf??? Out of character stuff just to make him look like a bad guy for a scene that wasn't necessary). That's why for example the duel is completely fine, drunk Usopp is perfect…

The plot is fine, most of the additions are fine, actors are amazing and nail it every time… But it screams Netflix and specifically american audience.

  6. Honestly, Krieg getting axed isn't a big deal. In fact, that's the fate that Krieg should've originally suffered, and it's only 2 reasons that he goes as far as he did in manga and anime.
    1. While Mihawk was wiping out his fleet on the Grand Line, a storm interfered, allowing Krieg's flagship to get away.
    2. For some reason, instead of finishing what he started, after fighting Zoro, Mihawk just decided to leave, even after Krieg decides to take a potshot at him, he just leaves, and Luffy is forced to clean up after him.
So, I'm perfectly fine with what they did here. If the main complaint is the fight between Luffy and Krieg getting cut to show "Luffy's perseverance", we get that in Season 2 in his fight with Crocodile after he gets poisoned.

  7. I think you glossed over Luffy telling Zeff off here. Luffy is taking his biased perspectie of his Grandpa Garp, and is viewing Zeff as another stuborn old man getting in the way of someone's dream, but is actually wrong. It establishes that while their are parallels with Zeff and Garp, there is also some contrasts that gets spotlighted in another episode. It's also just rare to see the main character Luffy, be morally in the wrong. He's got the right spirit, but is missing the context and is displaying a more narrow perspective than the anime counterpart, then is immediately proved to be mistaken, so it's like a subtle learning moment for Luffy to be more openminded.

  8. I actually really like how they changed things up so then Zoro had a night to prepare and Nami hadn't left yet. We actually got to see the tensions amongst the crew, got moments like Nami reading to an unconscious Zoro or the two of them drinking together or her arguing with Luffy, and what led to Nami leaving rather than having it all off screen or too fast paced. Too many modern stories nowadays don't know the value of slowing down and letting characters breathe and instead rather have everything happen one after another. The live action One Piece knows the value of it very well and it shows in episode 5-6.

  9. @13:36 I'm a detractor. On the other hand I do know this show has ONLY the purpose of introducing new people to the series… Which is annoying. But castings are the absolute BONKERS STRONGEST point of the Netflix adaptation. EVERYONE looks like they're supposed to.
Race-swaps irk me… especially Lucky Roux. Why? WHY Luck Roux?! Banchina has a cameo, even in the original series, so that's not that big of a deal (except the nose she and Usopp are missing… hrmmghkk 😑), and FUCK Alvida, nobody cares about that slipery gal. Which reminds me – do they plan to do a certain thing to her at the begining of the next season? Cause I'm pretty sure after she [ spoiler ] she got [ spoiler ] . She definitely didn't look in Lougetown like she was shown at the end of the first Live Action season. So I hope they at least address that.
But castings are on-point. They don't miss, even though I'd like the story to stay closer to source material, but OK. After a period of grief and anger I'm moving straight to acceptance… that this show is not for me. Imma watch later seasons out of curiosity, but not get invested, cause it's not what I was hoping for.

  10. I always took Garp's Angry ranting and then bursting into laughter as more a "YOU FUCKING LITTLE SHIT!…. THATS MY BOY!!" Like he is infuriated that Luffy Damaged his ship… and then he's just proud of sheer audacity

  12. I found it weird how little Nami trusted in Zoro tho. Like she never even saw Mihawk fighting, she actually only saw how good Zoro is. Like put a little more trust in your friend…

  13. To be fair how many times does the going merry or thousand sunny fire a cannon in the entire series.
My count is once on the rock where they find Johnny and that other bounty hunter
They fire the cannon against the flying fish riders and I think they fire the cannon one other time to introduce the laser cannon. So ha ussop doesn't really need to be much of a cannon user. Most balls get reflected by luffy or kicked by sanji

  14. I just love that the den den mushi have the same face features as their owners – Garp's has a beard and stache, Morgan's had his jaw plate. Is this something that's taken from the manga/anime?

  15. My favorite episode thus far. This one has so many tings that I love: The design of the Baratie (including the bar), the crew dynamic (including Usopp's dance and Zoro and Nami's drinking game), Taz as Sanji and his dynamic with Zeff, Garp's conversation with Koby, and literally everything Mihawk. This is Netflix at its best.
