The Buckley-class destroyer escorts were smaller and cheaper alternatives to standard US Navy destroyers. However, they were outstanding vessels when it came to anti-submarine warfare and escort duties. And USS England was one of them.
Armed with the powerful British-designed 24-barrel Hedgehog mortar, England was equipped with all the essential features that made her an excellent submarine hunter, despite her size and armament compared to larger battleships.
In a remarkable and historic run, the tiny warship would excel at sinking enemy submarines in waters infested by Japanese vessels during a short but fruitful hunting season.
And her record remains unbroken almost 80 years later…

Wasn't the ship that did it was Her Crew
A lot of ship sinking markets on the kills of their vessels at the end of the war
Wait…this ship has a record of sinking enemy subs that has yet to be broken you say? Well, that’s a “duh” comment if I ever heard one. How many wars have we had since WWII where we had an opportunity to go sink hundreds of submarines? Let me think…
At the beginning of this video, you compared the small USS England to larger "battleships"? That is the largest naval ship afloat. That's like comparing a house cat to a wild lion. A much better comparison would be to a destroyer or a light cruiser which are much closer in size and armament. Naturally, that would be the clever thing to do but after watching several of your videos I fully understand that clever is the one thing you are not. Careless and inaccurate is a far more fitting description of your channel. At 9:21 you state the ship joined a "larger task force of former destroyers". What does that mean? The "former" destroyers have now changed into battleships or aircraft carriers. A bloody miracle! In spite of all your great many shortcomings and repeated and often fake footage from other wars and battles, somehow you manage to still be interesting.
USE Hammerberg DE 1015.
I knew a stoker who was on a destroyer in ww2.
He said the stern would lift out of the waters when the depth charges exploded.
A record unbroken in 80 years? Kind of a silly record, given that there have been no wars between major naval powers in that time.
Thank You Mrs England, She did well, She sure did give them hell,
The Battles must have been Thrilling and Hair Raising (period)
Flower class corvettes?
I've watched your videos so much that I can see that you use the same footage over and over,,,,, good work and thanks
Rather a sad end to a remarkable and heroic "little" warship..!!
What a terrible death it must have been for those poor Japanese sailors.
Ah hell.
Go ahead England.
Semper Fi…!
Ever thought of doing a bit on ‘Johnny’ Walker?
He was an eccentric Royal Navy officer who was at the tip of the spear in the early part of the Battle of the Atlantic.
Love your stuff.
I thought the corvettes were the Uboat fighter. How does a corvette compare to a destroyer escort?
How did a man have a a surname of England that's a country that's like having a surname Germany France America it's crazy I know that some people used to have their names like where they was from like say David of York you know for an example but that's Regional stuff not a country the only thing I can think of is when he come to the American colonies his ancestor or him he had such a thick British accent that people to start calling England and he didn't have a last name cuz he was a rebel like a maybe some rabble didn't have a last name and he just that stuck England it's strange
The Royal Navy would say the reasons he would did so good with because of her name
Nice to see some smaller ship love.
To all the brave men who served in combat in WW2: Thank you for our Freedom!!!!!!!
If I heard it correctly the Japanese operation was code-named "Eigo" – rather ironically this means "Operation English"
My grandfather spent 2 years in the med 43-45 as a cook on a US Navy sub chaser. Never sunk a sub, just scared the hell out of a few of them.
I think you mean, detected by SONAR, radar won't pick up submerged contacts
The two most famous destroyer escorts were USS England and USS Samuel B. Roberts.
The USS Samuel B Roberts fired 623 rounds of 5" shells in the Battle of Samar and fought the heavy cruiser Chikuma to a draw and blew off her No#3 turret.
