“One Hot Mess!” Chagos Islands Deal Could Be ‘Rushed Through’ Before Trump Inauguration

Mauritius’s prime minister is to meet senior government figures, reports have suggested, amid claims that a deal for the UK relinquish control the Chagos Islands is nearing completion.

The UK and Mauritius said they have made “good progress” on a revised agreement, with Mauritian PM Navin Ramgoolam claiming the UK wants it finalised before Donald Trump is sworn in as president on January 20.

Media reports have suggested the future of the joint UK-US military base on Diego Garcia – the largest island in the Chagos archipelago – might be secured for only 50 years rather than the 99 years initially discussed.

Talk’s Mike Graham discusses the story with head of the national security unit at the Policy Exchange, Marcus Solarz Hendriks.

  1. If Starmer persists in handing over the sovereignty of our Chagos Islands to Mauritius, he will make the World less safe. Just because of an anti-colonial campaign led by Mauritius and involving the UN, does not mean these islands should be given to Mauritius. The sale of the Chagos Islands must be halted because they are vital to our chain of command and logistic control. They have been legally owned and administered by Britain since 1814. The largest island, Diego Garcia, is now a large, and vitally important strategic military base. Starmer and especially Lammy should not let their misplaced Lefty colonial guilt interfere in this situation. Diego Garcia is an extremely important base for both our and US forces and must remain so.
Mauritius never owned these islands and is an ally of expansionist China and will come under their malign influence to give them access. Diego Garcia is the most strategic part of this archipelago and helps defend Western interests. As the World gets more dangerous, sacrificing strategic assets on the altar of misplaced colonial guilt would be complete madness.

  5. Clearly Trump quite rightly has zero respect for communist Starmer and village idiot Lammy, so they best stall on the deal unless the islands have stalled iwaiting for Trump? Trump needs to rip it up. Who the hell do these 2 fools think they are. I am happy for Trump to not engage with these idiots going forward, they are an embarrassment to the uk

  6. Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana has highlighted the transfer of sovereignty from the UK to Mauritius as a strategic blunder. This proposed transfer flies in the face of Western interests as it confronts the rising threat from China. China is far too interested in expanding its influence from the China Sea into the Indian Ocean. The UK govt is also ignoring the wishes of Chagos Islanders, some of whom live in the UK. China's Belt & Road policy is already influencing policy in Mauritius.

  8. Starmer knows the US will just veto the thing either way. However he is hoping that Mauritius will accept the ten billion pound plus fee for accepting the islands. Win win for Starmer as he can give away a chunk of money for nothing in return.

That is what his mission is. Total annihilation of the UK as we know it.

  9. I really hope this so called deal does not go through and we retain these islands. We simply can not afford to pay such sums to a third world country. Its financial suicide! I pray that the Americans can step in and block it somehow and hopefully we can be rid of this Labour scum government and Starmer sooner, rather than later!

  10. If Starmer was dead set on giving away the Chagos Islands why not give them to the US, at least they are our allies. Why on earth are they giving them to Mauritius ?, They may as well just hand them over to China and save Mauritius the trouble of doing it.

  11. Another thick right wing snowflake who probably had no idea where the islands were before we followed international law and agreed to hand them back. The UN and international court for justice both ruled that we have absolutely no claim for sovereignty of the islands. We stole them and kicked the islanders off.

  12. While the ICJ's advisory opinion and the UN General Assembly resolution are not legally binding, they carry immense political and moral weight. The ICJ's ruling, as the opinion of the UN's highest court, reflects the principles of international law, while the General Assembly's overwhelming vote highlights global consensus on the matter. If the UK were to agree to a contentious case at the ICJ, the ruling would likely be consistent with the advisory opinion, further solidifying the illegality of British claims. The resolution also has immediate practical implications: the UN, its specialized agencies, and all other international organizations are now obligated under UN law to support Mauritius' decolonization efforts, regardless of the UK's assertions of sovereignty. The UN has already updated its maps to reflect Mauritius' sovereignty over the Chagos Archipelago, further undermining the UK's claim.

The UK's lease agreement with the US for the Diego Garcia military base is also no longer valid under international law, as the UK lacks legitimate sovereignty over the territory to enter into such agreements. Mauritius should bypass the UK and negotiate directly with the US to ensure the continued operation of the base under Mauritian sovereignty, potentially through a leasing arrangement. Additionally, Mauritius should sue the British Crown for crimes against humanity, citing the forced displacement of the Chagossians as a grave violation of international law, including their right to self-determination and protection against forced eviction. These actions, combined with continued diplomatic and legal efforts, would reinforce Mauritius' position and accelerate the decolonization process.

  13. Chagos belongs to Mauritus under French rule. British took over Mauritius that included the Chagos islands. Entire population of Chagos were deported to Mauritius to make room for the US terrorist base. The entire base should be gone for a terrorist free region.

  14. Surely any deal has to have a stent? King should refuse to sign giving any excuse to push past Monday when Trump will save UK from stupidity of Lammy , Starmer and the rest of this moronic stupid Labour party. Of course King should have put stop to this long ago as his mother would have done.

  16. If the UK cannot afford to look after pensioners and the people of the UK, just rent the Chagos Islands to the USA and then we will not have to pay Mauritius 9Billion to take it on. Save 9Billion, bring some revenue in and pay the pensioners their heating allowance plus plus…

  17. I would love to see Starmer explain to trump why he did this a couple of days before trump is inaugurated. Will he and Lammy by feted next time they visit Washington? Starmer is really trying to pick a fight with Truno that he can’t win. Has he not learned from grooming gangs scandal? We know Trump will not pull the US out of DG, so this serves no purpose. Trump will meme Starmer to death! Musk is already going after Starmer, but it can get so much
    worse.
