Once You Stop Caring, Results Come | The Law of Reverse Effect

Author Aldous Huxley first described the ‘Law of Reverse Effect,’ saying that “The harder we try with the conscious will to do something, the less we shall succeed.” So, could it really be that when we stop consciously trying to succeed, we increase our chances of success? Will results come once we stop caring? This video explores the law of reverse effect, also known as the law of reversed effort.

The amount of suffering in the world is vast, so observed Schopenhauer. Life is a constant striving, a relentless pursuit of desires and needs that keep appearing. So it’s no surprise that people label this philosopher ‘pessimistic’ and ‘dark.’ But his observations aren’t unfounded.

  1. This advice on not caring about outcomes , runs completely counter to the philosophy espoused by law of attraction thinking where the emphasis is on having a detailed visualization of ones expectations , so what is the correct way to go about life then?

  3. And so nearing 60 I am embracing this philosophy. How much of my yrue inner self have I sacrifice by caring. By the exhausted practice of caring I alienated myself fro my true self. My emotional regulation was dependent on caring . While not listening to myself. By sacrificing my authentic self in the interest of what I called love. Self love was not cultivated. Here I am. A true journey of replacing with caring with growth and self love.

  4. This philosophy doesn't always ring true. In a war, not caring means letting your guard down which will prove fatal more often than not. In college, I cared about what grades I got. If I hadn't cared, I might not have graduated. So this person's philosophy about not caring has exceptions.

  5. I had a high school speech as class president to give more than 10 years ago. I never prepared a full speech the night before I thought about what i would say and wrote some notes down. (Very little notes 😂)
Speech day, all the other class presidents had full pages of speech organized and they read their speech sounding very monotonous, my turn i go up wing it with a few notes just talking to the crowd ( the entire school and their parents) i was the only one to make the crowd laugh and then also cry some sad tears. I was worried about preparing a speech then i thought im just going on stage and talking and everything came natural.

  7. Someone really needs to beat the sociology department with a thesaurus for this video's title.

Reverse effect theory is about not obsessing over things, and this lesson was even featured in TV shows I grew up watching.

There's a difference between caring and being obsessive.

  9. Yes, it's about planning, thinking, visualising but then letting go. I have a weekly responsibility that my mindbody does not look forward to – when I let go and arrived 5 minutes late, 5 members of staff were there doing what I normally do on my own with a burdensome mind!!. Great lesson.

    Mental control paradox.
    What you insist, persists.
Creative process is surrender, not control. Mystery is at the heart of creativity.
    Wu Wei, effortless action. Non-striving.
Attention is on the task at hand, not on the future or past.
Our thoughts can stand in our way.
