  1. I'd have to read the surrounding context to know for sure in this scenario, but 'in his stead' means to take someone's place. So, if you have a substitute teacher, they're teaching you in your teacher's stead. "How in fae-land did I think I could do this in his stead?" is "How did I think I could replace him?" So, it might be right, but if there's other indicators around the sentence it might be a mistake like you're saying.
