On the Whistle: Atalanta 0-0 Arsenal – “Raya to the rescue!”

My thoughts on a turgid game lit up by a sensational double-save.

  1. You’re the best James. Martinelli needs to find his form, along with Partey, the pair are painful to watch on the pitch. The double save from Raya had me lost for words, but sadly was the only highlight of the game. Cheers! COYG.

  2. Arsenal should be winning these matches without struggle. And it looks like we are struggling as a team. Our games are slow, not free flowing, very defensive our forwards aren’t forwarding 🙂

  3. I live in the Far East and got up at 3AM to watch this bore draw. I wish I had stayed in bed asleep… Raya's amazing double save was the only exciting moment in this dreadful game. I think Arteta's team selection was poor. With Calafiori and Jorginho's knowledge of Italian football and players I can't believe he picked Timber and Partay instead…Martinelli, Jesus along with Partay were abysmal. Saka was clearly not up to his usual standard. Rice wasn't great either, so the front line and midfield were very poor. Thank goodness for Raya, Saliba, Gabriel, White and Timber. Without our great defense we probably would have lost 2-0 or worse.. Atlanta are a pretty good side though and , at the end of the day a draw was a decent result given our almost non-existent attack and muddled midfield.
Raya is the hero of the moment. What a great goalie!

  4. Really love what I see from calafiori every time he comes on. Our passing tempo noticeably improved and he knows how to find space in midfield. Also does the pointing thing that Odegaard does. He’s going to be our secret weapon this year

  5. Your agenda against Partey is becoming tiring. Partey is not in the team for his defensive prowess. If so Mikel would play Calafiori or Timber. Partey is in the team for his unique midfield play that involves moving the ball up the pitch quickly. No player at Arsenal can do that. Further, he has a unique ability to get past his marker which opens spaces on the field. That is why Partey plays.

  6. I suppose we all see games differently. I thought it was an interesting game if not a classic. There were some good performances from both sets of players..
If you were only looking at one team then I can imagine it was boring.. You can see the big hole that Odagard has left. It wasn't so obvious against spurs.

  7. My read on the early Partey substitution is that Arteta might approach City with a more conservative mindset, and drop Martinelli for Trossard, and have a midfield trio of Rice, Partey and Jorginho. I'd rather see Partey out of the team at this point, but I think Arteta would only do that at the very least after City. Great content as always James!

  8. With space tighter than an Atlanta away game, a shelf about to collapse quicker than a 2nd season Sp*rs manager and a front room corner with delivery that Jovas would commend, thank you again for your Gabrielesque efforts!
