In the 1970s, the ultimate trip for any backpacker was the storied “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. As a 23-year-old, Rick made the trek, and like a travel writer in training, he documented it all. Leaping off a moving train in Yugoslavia, getting lost in Lahore, getting high for the first time in Herat, battling leeches in Pokhara, making the scene on Freak Street in Kathmandu…it’s all in Rick’s 60,000-word journal, which is now his newest book. To celebrate the release of On the Hippie Trail, stow away with Rick as he shares photos and tells tales from his trip of a lifetime. #mondaynighttravel #ricksteves #hippietrail

Happy travel Rick Steves ❤❤
Hi Rick, what month in 1978 did you travel thru Afganistan. We went thru in May 1978 and the border was closed and we had to go south thru the baluchestan desert to Quetta and onto lahore.
The book sounds great Rick. I can't wait to get my hands on a copy.
Love this, love Rick Steves reflections ❤
I was late going to my Old Lady Fitness’ class as I just had to finish listening to your podcast! My Hubbie & I have travelled for over 50 yrs and we believe there wouldn’t be as many wars & uneven split of wealth if everyone travelled. Once you’ve visited a country you care . about the residents. Thanks for this blog cast as it captured a part of our youth for us!
Congrats on the book! Id love to see you speaking again, so I will be on the lookout for the tour. My trip to Ireland and Scotland could not have happened as wonderful as it did without your insight! Glasgow, wow!
This video about your book made me remember that my travels aren’t over. I remember when we were respected around the world. Now, I’m afraid to say I am from the US. I have learned so much because of the freedom I had to travel to so many wonderful countries! I look forward to your book. I wish I had kept a journal 🙏
Hey Rick, could you do a book signing and talk at Elephant Cloud Cafe in Crestone Colorado. You would pack the place, because there are so many old Hippies there. Your publisher is going to laugh at this one but i guarantee you will never forget it!
Loving this.
Amazing to think that without this trip we wouldn’t have Rick Steves!
I did a shorter but similar travel in 1985 and it changed me forever. Recently my daughter gave me the gift of Storyworth a way for someone to write a book for themselves over a year or two. It gave me the opportunity to open the journal from that time and I was amazed at the things that I did and how my brain and heart were opened up, not to be closed again. And how we figured out how and where to go—without an internet—with the local library and photocopying a few pages. I recognized the excitement in you remembering those times. This last Christmas I gave my daughter a pashmina shawl that I bought from the man that wove it in Kathmandu in 1985. It gives me the chance to tell her some of those stories. Namaste 🙏🏼
I really enjoyed hearing you remenis about your trip and find renewed joy in old suveniors. Please excuse my spelling………………
I love his idea of travel providing a sense of dual citizenship. One is our country of origin and the other is a global citizenship. It represents an expansion of the mind by providing such rich experiences. Although Rick says one needs to be an extrovert for these experiences I don’t believe that. introverts have rich world experiences as well.
