I love this James Bond movie.
You really must watch at least a couple of episodes of The Avengers with Diana Rigg, the perfect woman for every Englishman of a certain age.
This was probably the most funniest ending reaction I’ve seen. Carly “I’ am shook!” Cassie“I am pissed!”
Honestly, in many ways, storywise, this is the best Bond film. If Connery had been in it, it definitely would be the best of the films.
Lazenby even admitted he was wrong for not signing a multi film contract and only doing the one film. He says he was listening to all the wrong advice from his agents and should have thought for himself.
First off I love you both and look forward to your reactions! One drawback of only watching a couple per Bond actor is that these movies did have their own continuity; a very loose continuity sometimes. The biggest part of that was that the evil organization SPECTRE was behind the bad guy of every movie except Goldfinger up to that point and Blofeld is their leader. This is why him getting away is allowed in the movie. He's the BIG big bad and it builds up to his death… sorta… the movies really kinda mess that up. In the books SPECTRE is part of a trilogy of novels and this movie is the middle book. The last book is almost entirely about Bond grieving and ultimately seeking revenge. The movies expanded SPECTRE's role by replacing SMERSH (the russian MI6) which were the villians in most of the other novels. One funny thing about this is they adapted this movie so faithfully to the book that they completely ignore that Bond and Blofeld met face to face in the movie right before this one. Hope this context helps a little. I know it's still a devastating ending, but I feel like it gives the movie more weight and is something only an archenemy should be allowed to do in a story… like of Bond was going to suffer anything this bad it had better be Blofeld behind it.
This is the worst one of the whole series.
watch for your eyes only to see what happens
James Bond is the same character just different actors, don't listen to that other guy. Previous films are referenced up until craig. Even in this film his gadgets from the previous movies and their themes are shown after he gives Moneypenny his resignation.
It's funny how it all worked out. They brought in this guy with no thought that it would end up a quality film, just really cynical production thinking. But it ended up great. And then he dipped because they were treating him like garbage. Which only increased the conspicuousness of how good this movie is. And btw….holy crap…dude is still alive.
You get a follow up to this ending in Roger Moore's For Your Eyes Only. Bond references he has been married a few times after this.
It's not totally a one-off, the wedding and its tragic end is referenced in a couple of later Bond films. It's a tragedy that is shown to sometimes haunt Bond (at least until the full reboot with Daniel Craig).
Diana Rigg also played as Emma Peel in the avengers in the 60's
Good movie, allthough I still don't like George Lazenby as Bond though. The contrast with the charismatic Sean is way to big. But I do like the cinematography, the plot, the work of Peter Hunt and, ofcourse the music. That fantastic score by John Barry!
"That just felt cruel." Yes, that's the point.
Just imagine how you would've felt if you hadn't skipped films and had even more of a "finally, he's married" feeling.
Of course, by skipping films you did avoid a major timeline continuity error,…so there's that as a small consolation prize.
If you want to get the Austin Powers jokes, you may need to see Dr No, Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever and a couple of others!
You should just do all of Roger moore movies! Too many good ones!
It’s better to watch Moore’s movies then some of the tv shows you’re doing and some other movies! Just do them all
You should do least the first 4 off moors movies.
Need to do
Live and let die
The 2 movies with jaws
For your eyes only.
Need to do least those 4 movies
One of my favorite Bond movies and in spite of being a Bond fan since the 70s, I only saw it for the first time about 5 or 6 years ago.
The next James Bond was Sean Connery back as James Bond again in Diamond are Forever.
Btw Roger moore was a better bond then this bond, George lazenby
I really enjoy Diamonds are Forever but I really wish we got to see Lazenby again. It is a shame he got way into the counter culture movement and got out of acting. He was very good.
Oh boy, are you ever learning the most famous tropes of cinema history the hard way!
I'm not gloating at all, but you are essentially compressing all the discoveries and surprises, beginnings and endings – good and bad – of 70 to 80 years of cinema history into a few months. The normal movie-going audience had years and decades to soak these things up bit by bit, and Bond fans were often at least somewhat familiar with the novels, too. Due to your history, you guys have almost none of that genre-saviness, although you have been helter-skeltering it very admirably on this channel. Tracy's tragic death is as well-known a movie fact as who Luke Skywalker's father is, but it was hard watching you walk into that emotional snow chipper so completely unaware.
I also find it amazing that there are people who are actually so unaware of these things. I can't even remember a time when I didn't know she would die. Mad respect for weathering this storm, though! Plus you had each other for comfort. Hope, you don't let this discourage you from watching more Bond!
This is by far the worst Bond movie. I don't care how much it matches the book. Pretty sure this disaster is the reason why Lazenby was never called back for another Bond movie
For some fun, check out "the avengers" not the MCU, the old BBC TV series (ignore the film with Uma Thurman) it's similar to bond and has Diana Riggs as a kick butt spy
You girls seem upset by this ending. It was a bit depressing when I first saw it too but Bond movies should be seen as a series of films. Think back to how Spectre wanted revenge in FRWL for Dr No. And in movie that follows this, Bond faces Blofeld again.
First mention to Tracy's death.
2.12 – 2.24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwvN0qvs5tA
Underrated movie but it would have been better if Sean Connery.
For me, and this is just my opinion, this is the worst James Bond movie out of all of them. I really don't like Lazenby. Every time I watch this movie I either fall asleep or just get bored because it's so boring in the middle. They could have cut out 15 or 20 minutes to make it move faster. But, unfortunately they didn't.
Made me laugh how shocked you 2 got at Tracy's death.
Watch For Your Eyes Only, at least the opening. Bond finally gets back at Blofeld in the cold opening before the credits. And you'll have to pause on the headstone…he was visiting Theresa's grave.
You two are just so goddam wholesome/lovely!!! You make me smile!! Thank you… in a world that seems to have so many things not to smile about sometimes…. it's nice to get lost in your vids for a bit!
Even with the ending!
Girls, you have to keep in mind that regardless of the actor, all of them play the same character. They are not independent stories. They have consequences for James Bond´s life in later movies.
George Baker, who appears briefly as the real Sir Hilary (who Bond impersonates when he meets Blofeld), was Ian Fleming's pick to play Bond.
I watched this because I was interested to see how you reacted to the ending….. once you reflect on how you reacted…. I am sure you'll realise this was probably the best one you have seen so far.
Wait till you watch the Daniel Craig bond movies
I believe the woman Bond saved in the opening of the film is Diana Riggs who played a secret agent in the British Action series “The Avengers” and Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.
You know what makes this worse? The next movie was a crap fest and we never saw James get his proper revenge like he did in the books
"No wonder this was a one off…"
As mentioned in other comments, it's not the fault of the studio that the movie ends like this; the novel really ends like this and following stories deal with Bond going after Blofeld for revenge.
But other things also conspired to make this film one of the most rejected films of the franchise, and of all the film industry (at those times). First, the change of actor; today it's more accepted that franchises recast some characters (instead of writting them off), but this was one of the first (if not the first) franchise to try this; and a lot of people wanted Sean Connery back.
After the first two Bond films (that are more in the spirit of what spionage most of the times really is: investigation and sneaky relationships), the following film set the "action packed" formula where Bond goes from one action sequence to the other. "On Her Majesty's…" feels so slow because it goes back to the roots of the source material and what spionage, most of the times, is: investigation and sneaky relationship XD.
On top of that, the general perception of what Bond "should" be. While Bond has become a trope of a ladies man, always on fancy missions, drinking martinis… the novels are much darker than that. The audience (that wasn't familiar with the novels) were expecting a light hearted film that ended like all the other ones had; when the studios decided to stick a bit more to the original source material, people who were not used to the "dark" Bond were furious. Those were the times when the rules of movies were strict and audiences didn't want the broken: the good guy in these films had to end up with the girl, enjoying a happy time; anything but that was unacceptable because good guys don't lose.
And we could add some odd choices, that maybe don't fit well in that spirt, like making Bond a "I can do everything" character, even more than it regularly is (they did so to make George Lazenby shine, surviving stunt after stunt without gadgets… but it ends up feeling a bit over the top at times) and ending such a tragic moment in the life of Bond with the uplifting theme that only adds to the "what the hell has just happened" moment.
The film has been reevaluated in recent times; which means the film (and George Lazenby) were not exactly bad; they just saw the light in the wrong timeframe. The franchise didn't shy away (much) from this film: the following film continues the hunt for Blofeld after Tracy's death and future films show that Bond, after all the years past, still has a special place in his heart for his late wife.
:001 Q
hahaha when they're so happy saying "I love happy endings!" and "I love when movies end in a wedding! They're so cute together" meanwhile I'm sitting here with the knowledge of what's about to happen grinning from ear to ear in anticipation. Did not disappoint. 🤣🤣Poor girls.
Keep going with Bond. But now that you've gotten further into the secret agent genre. I need to ask when are you and Carly going to start watching the Kingsman movies?
So, Blofeld manages to rob the world of happiness after all and all it took was a few sea-salted chocolate caramels…and an early 7th-anniversary jacket. Mwahahahahahaha
