Kyiv was a thriving metropolis when Moscow was still a swamp. When the Mongols invaded, the Kyivan people fought back so the Mongols burned down their beloved city and survivors scattered across the steppes of modern Ukraine. In contrast, when the Mongols invaded Moscow, the Muscovites kneeled so their city was spared.
