"The ruins are now being re-purposed". I love this statement by Bill. This is a wonderful video and I found myself wondering what it would be like to be in a high school class dedicated to local history, and to hear him or to watch the video as an adjunct to what we are learning didactically. My main takeaway from this video, Josh, is how Bill was able to share so much history and the soul of the region without getting caught up in the modern tendency to use this kind of opportunity as a way to sling vitriol at the "wrongs" of the past. He spoke of issues in the past related to the mining companies and the European versus Native American conflicts, among other problematic historical realities, and yet didn't start pounding his fist on the podium or railing against what happened. This allowed me as a viewer and listener to just sit back and absorb the story. I found this such a welcomed relief from the ranting and attacking that is so prevalent in modern times. I have more I could say, but it's more about me and less about this great video so I'll just thank you for posting it. Job. Well. Done!
This was really a great video. He really has a wealth of information and can share it so smoothly. Doesn't miss a beat. He is a great storyteller. I say he is a great teacher because of that. Not boring like most teachers. Students are lucky to have him. When he talks, he really holds your attention. I like how he looked back at history and brought it forward to today. That town has surely witnessed and been through a lot. The town has a lot of rich history. It is good to see the town has found a way to reinvent itself. I like that he said the ruins are being repurposed. If we allow it, beauty can and will come from ashes. Another great story from a great storyteller. Keep them coming.
I am from Europe, Croatia, Zagreb is where i live. Because I love music, John Denver, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings brought me here and to Mountain Roots. I like the videos of both channels. Who knows, maybe one day I will be able to visit the beautiful Appalachian region.
