If moving 4 million units is still bankrupting your dev, then your publisher has fucked you. Can't eat exposure.
Oddworld would've been bigger if they stuck with 3d
Road to a million! Let’s go!!!

I keep loving this. More news please!
They aren't arguing that it got downloaded 4M times because it was free. They are saying that if they could have released it earlier a percentage of those 4M people would have paid full price for it, they even said just 50,00 – 100,000 people in the earlier quote in the same article. So if instead 4M PS+ downloads it was 100,000 "real" downloads and 3.9M PS+ downloads, that would have made them a lot more money. There really is no disputing that. By being on PS+ right away, it eliminated the incentive for any customers to pay full price.
C'mon people get Jesse to 1mill
And now devs will liken subscriptions to piracy like they did with used games a decade ago. To be fair, I'm a fan of anything Oddworld and ended up buying Soulstorm months before it was even available on GamePass.
Lol, if you're going to get upset about how many people will download your game for free on a subscription service, then maybe don't agree to put your game on a subscription service. If your game couldn't be completed without the funding from said service, then you wouldn't have made a lick of profit without that support because you'd have no game to sell.
I feel sorry for the oddworld team though they have gone through so much just trying to keep their company alive and bring their beautiful games to the world. Yet big companies like epicgames and playstation just basically throw money at them (which they have to take to achieve their indie company goals) to do whatever they want with their games. I wish they could achieve their goals without these big companies money.
I'm commenting for the algo!
I know everyone is loving gamepass but that shit is going to bite everyone in the ass pretty soon. It's happened with most subscription services, they end up shafting creators and audience alike. Also people cheering for microsoft buying up all these studios are thinking in the short term imo. Give it a decade and we'll see if any of them are still doing stuff.
If they expected to sell 50,000 to 100,000 copies and were compensated as such, it sounds like they got exactly what they were expecting. What's happened is the game was downloaded more BECAUSE it was free and now dude thinks he's entitled to more compensation.
What he's not considering is they may not have even hit that 50-100 thousand mark if the game wasn't free because literally no one was looking for an Oddworld remake. I was an avid Oddworld fan back in the day and I passed on this one, even for free, because it was just superfluous.
Is there an official source saying Sony won’t be doing first party launch titles on their gamepass competitor?
I really hope Oddworld makes it so they can continue making wonderful games. The universe they made is incredible, I was in love since forever
Oddworld 5 delayed then? XD
keep up the great work, Jessie!
Well, saying "we missed out on a lot of money" doesn't mean "compared with exactly that number of copies if sold". Lanning isn't the guy for that kind of hyperbole. But there is ample room for whatever presumed "conversion rate" to still feel having gotten a rough deal regardless, particularly since THEY know how much Sonny got to to lowball them in their time of desperation. They have the numbers compared with platforms they DIDN'T release that way, they have the data of prior releases, too. So I actually believe Lannign when he says "this did totally not go as planned, and we got way less money out of it and tanked our "legitemate sales" because of it, because we had to, and are unhappy with that outcome. Honestly, I think this "I don't think they missed out on much"? It literally makes me angry. It entirely depends on how much money they actually got, and how many (or little) sales would have covered that cashflow. To just assume that they got a fair deal reflecting the "actual sales volume" and the rest is entirely the imaginary sales looking at the 4 million (again, on sonys plattform alone). Maybe, Jesse, that is entirely too dismissive. aggrevatingly so.
Great work as usual!
Idk.. oddworld has some crazy nostalgia for those who grew up on ps1
