Odds of Drawing a Sheep Tag | Fresh Tracks Weekly (Ep. 41)

Big news. Marcus drew a bighorn sheep tag in Montana.

A lot of excitement and plans going into the upcoming season but also reeling back and talking about the status of bighorn sheep in Montana along with Shiras moose and mountain goat.

Many people wait a lifetime to draw one of these tags and unfortunately in Montana, populations are trending down while applications are trending up.

We ponder what we can do and what research has been done and will hopefully be done in the future to help conserve and build back moose, sheep, and goat herds.

A few news items this week include Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks messing up the moose and sheep draw, a bill in Nevada to make the “wild mustang” the Nevada State Horse, and a new elk research project that examined different migration tactics used by elk in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

  1. They didn't take them away , so the animals come in second to the money ! Been applying forever but the rams have to come first . High numbers of cats getting them no matter what they're telling us .

  2. Congrats. Not just drawing a tag but getting to keep it after fwp once again dropped the ball. My 14 year old daughter was one of the unlucky ewe tag holders that got her tag taking away. I understand that over alacating tags can have serious problems down the road. But just a few years ago, they gave out 40 tags, then fwp moved a bunch of sheep to the little belts and slashed the tags to 5? They caused the problem of not having a herd population to sustain 40 ewe tags. Also, I really don't get the fact that the ram tag holders that were over drew get to keep them because fwp states that there will be no damage done to the population. Well, if that's the case, why aren't we drawing tags at the overdrawn number and not the one fwp set?

  3. My sister drew a Colorado desert big horn sheep on her first ever draw with no preference points. Crazy! Random draw…and she was lucky enough to be one of 17 people to draw these tags.

  4. Nevada doesn’t have sheep tag odds that good. You could have 25 points and still have terrible odds for cali bighorns. Deserts have better odds tho so I shouldn’t complain at least I should get one of those one day. Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep tag in Nevada would be like hitting the lottery

  5. I drew a mountain goat the first year I put in when I was 16. Never got excited about sheep but I have put in for moose for 44 years and have been unsuccessful. I don't have many years left so good job Marcus. Good luck with your hunt. Try it with archery for at least a week.

  6. Hopefully you’ll post the video of the hunt here but probably not for a long time because we don’t pay. Still waiting to see the video of the giant bull elk kill, but I guess we can just watch these talking and fishing videos instead, that should suffice.

  7. The people who drew those sheep tags only to get them taken away should get some sort of compensation for Montana's mistake. I drew a relatively good deer tag in NM this year and I would be so pissed if I found out it was a mistake that I drew it. I cant imagine how it feels for a sheep tag! Congrats on your sheep tag, Marcus!
