so how aircraft work is you get to choice two modes and you chose one per turn. patrol and rest. if your units patrol they have detection and intercept other fighters but if they're resting they can do other actions like air strikes so when you do battle make sure they're resting. also for how many fighters you need. well as much has you can with enough of them nothing will stand in your way.
