The BBC drama which shocked an entire generation. Winner of four BAFTAs including ‘Best Single Drama’, the story follows everyday Sheffield townsfolk as they struggle to survive a nuclear attack and the years of that follow. Originally broadcast at the height of the nuclear paranoia of the 80s, it sent shockwaves throughout the country and arguably changed the global political discourse on nuclear war.

  1. I watch this and can't help but think that based on how the producers portrayed the people, they really didn't think them worthy of saving anyway. I suppose that isn't surprising considering the sort running BBC.

  10. The most tragic thing is the aftermath. Of what happened to the generations to come.

    As soon as I saw how useless Ruth was to her parents and grandmother after the attack I knew her child didn’t stand a chance. I understand how devastated she was about losing jimmy. But all she could think of was herself her own suffering and this boy she was besotted with. She wasn’t even concerned with her baby. Her family NEEDED HER!! And I think her delivery 9 months later under barbaric squalid conditions robbed her of any remaining fortitude. Ten years later she died due to premature aging. But she had already been dead for a long time.

    Lack of formal education being the cause of children sounding like they had advanced dementia or were severely autistic…that’s an excuse and a poor one at that. Many people homeschool their children now and for centuries have raised generations of stable well adjusted and highly literate children. Even after civilizations collapse. Jane was from the time of her birth was viewed by her mother as a burden as something in the way. Jane was left to fend for herself and of course she turned out as little more than a feral child. Ruth lost interest the moment that jimmy she was so besotted with was out of the picture.

    There are people who come out of the most dire situations and not only survive but thrive. Ruth simply wasn’t one of the people who will be able to create a viable existence for her and her child. Frankly I was surprised that Jane outlived her mother. That Ruth didn’t simply kill her to relieve herself of the burden. She had no interest in being SELF sufficient. Let alone the burden of a child.

  13. Please excuse me, I don't want to prevent anybody's enjoyment of the film but by any chance, have you seen our Mandy?

    (3 hours later), Excuse me, excuse me — I've been standing out in this freaking fallout for 3 hours and still waiting to find out if ANYBODY HAS SEEN OUR
    MANDY?

    Okay, it's 20 hours later and apparently nobody has seen our Mandy — and if you see Irving Berlin float by, somebody let them know that there isn't a minister handy — but good luck to Mandy wherever she is or isn't.

    Now, before I go, does anybody know what happened to our Spot?

  15. About 45 minutes in. Great flick so far, it i could only understand what they are saying half the time.

    Also, in the 70's, was it cool to to bang a rando from the bar when you have a pregnant woman? He acts like hes single still and then does the nasty with some mid chick in his car. Whats up with that?

    Edit: Just watched the rest of it and im surprised Ruths child is so desensitized when her mother dies. That is so sad and horrific. What a disturbing movie (future "documentary" here in a few years with the Ukraine and Israel war).
