NSW motorists have demerits erased in good driving behaviour scheme

More than a million motorists in New South Wales have had a demerit point removed from their driver’s license this week.

In a bid to encourage drivers to follow road rules, Premier Chris Minns announced 1.24 million drivers had a demerit point erased for remaining offence-free for a year.

The state government will keep the trial active through 2024, meaning drivers could have another point removed.

351 people lost their lives in traffic accidents last year, a 25% rise from 2022.

The Premier warns the scheme isn’t an excuse to drive dangerously.

  1. I'm American but when I was young I got my license suspended like three different times for speeding or traffic tickets, my car got impounded several times. Never any felony but i had a lead foot and drove without insurance etc. I had to pay all my fines and even go to court to get my license back for the third time lol. I eventually have gone a very long time as a safe responsible driver but only because I learned the hard way.

  2. Double demerit points – bigger fines – more traffic cameras. Does not stop bad driving. In fact is this a back hand – labor plan to force cars off the road. It would be better to make bad drivers – attend – an advanced driving course – or lose their drivers license and car registration cancelled.

Fines don't teach people how to drive. And speeds zones that go and down – in a very short distance – should not have speed cameras – in those areas. If the signs are to close together.

In other words – speed zones should be more to do about the smooth flow of traffic. Not up – then down. All in the space of a few hundred meters. Considering – the old police radars – could more less then 300 meters inside a speed zone. To allow drivers – to change their speed – in a fair manner. Not right on the speed sign itself. A car takes time – to decelerate – or accelerate.

The main problem is – mobile phones – are the main problem. Electric cars – are going to be a problem. Given they weigh a lot more then your average car. They have kinetic energy – in that a heavier weight at speed – has a lot more momentum. Brake maintenance – and good tyres on electric cars – are critical. More so then on a car with a diesel or petrol engine.

You are carrying at least 1,000 kilograms – for smaller electric cars – much more extra weight for larger electric cars – their brakes and tyres – work a lot harder. And cost a lot more to maintain.

Endless cameras – just builds up resentment in voters. Road safety – comes down to – people watching the road. The problem for freeways – is they just get cars – to the blocked off ramps – faster. As the side streets with traffic lights – are to close together. There really has to be a rethink – of driver safety – and traffic lights – and speed zones.

By all means have huge fines – for people playing with the mobile phones. It would be better – to cancel – people's mobile phone plan for a month. And they can't use someone else's phone – or buy a cheap phone. Your name goes onto a blacklist. Locking you out of using a mobile phone for a month. However as we see in all labor states. Fines go unpaid – people keep driving on suspended drivers license.

The issue of fines – is also a huge mess. Big fines is not stopping speeding. Road safety – is simply knee jerk – reaction politics. Nothing works – as it's an outdated system that goes back past the 1970's. Cameras have simply replaced police on the road. Is not working.
