Norfolk Southern CEO testifies about Ohio train derailment – 3/9 (FULL LIVE STREAM)

Join Post reporters as the CEO of Norfolk Southern, Ohio’s U.S. senators and Environmental Protection Agency officials testify before Congress about the aftermath of the train derailment last month in East Palestine, Ohio, which created an environmental catastrophe and became a political flash point. The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works will hold a hearing focusing on the local, state and federal response to the derailment, as well as efforts to clean up the toxic chemicals that were released.

When the Norfolk Southern train went off the tracks on Feb. 3, several cars burst into flames. Temperatures in one of the cars carrying highly toxic gas began to rise. To avoid a potentially catastrophic explosion, officials signed off on a controlled release of the chemicals. But when residents of East Palestine were cleared to return to their homes days later, some began reporting symptoms such as headaches, nausea, itchy skin and dizziness. Videos showing dead fish circulated online. But state officials said their tests showed the air and water were safe. On March 3, the EPA ordered Norfolk Southern to test the area for dioxins, a dangerous class of pollutants.

The accident quickly turned into a national political battle. President Biden, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and EPA officials have faced criticism over the federal response. East Palestine residents have expressed fury at Norfolk Southern.

Libby Casey will anchor live coverage, along with James Hohmann, in The Washington Post’s newsroom. Rhonda Colvin will be live on Capitol Hill. Read more: https://wapo.st/3YqC0r1. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: https://wapo.st/2QOdcqK

  1. After the last three years confidence in the government is shaken? Get real Sen. Mullen – Trump destroyed confidence in our system and eroded EPA power and dilligence. Well done using this committee to score political points – you absolute shill.

  3. For those who want to understand what is going on, I return you to a few months ago:
When the workers of the rail lines where protesting the way the company was run.

While I am not a gambling girl, I would feel confident putting money on a 'policy issue' being to blame. In short – The safety requirements for this company are written as the bare minimal in mind, leaving the workers themselves picking up the slack. Putting in extra work to ensure a higher degree of safety then what is written down on paper.

Well, those workers just got told to shut up and endure the broken system!
So how many are now following the bare minimal policy when it comes to safety?
Why put in the extra work when the Government Itself won't come to your defense?
People will die, because government backed a corporate structure over worker concerns.

This isn't unique to Train Lines either, it is a common phenomenon you will find in every place of employment. It is a form of 'reverse sabotage,' where the workers in a company see a problem caused by some policy that they can 'enhance' to ensure it works. The managers are top continue to think the policy is doing good, when in reality it is the workers not wanting to see their jobs fail….

Well, when the workers stop caring about that failure part:
What motivates them to fix errors within the policies?

  5. This is an insane idea…since the gov and the railroad are both to blame for this, they should build an exact duplicate city as close in proximity to this one as possible and just let the people start over in sort of the same house. The money being spent on illegals and foreign wars would easily finance this. It is unGodly that they are trying to force people into a place they have made uninhabitable. Residents are being given 'hotel cards' while illegals just show up and get cash and the royal treatment. How about Norfolk Southern give every homeowners a black credit card and let them really rebuild their lives? Help renters find other places to rent and pay all deposits to get them started? And give everyone enough money to move? This money is already there. Use it for Americans. Talk is not worth anything. All you biden voters have this on your heads. Hope you are happy.

  6. Just another one of these predictable clownshows. Only the faces change and the companies / banks, etc. Profits over people is the American way of capitalism. It's built into the very fabric of how capitalism works in America. Another example is how the pharmaceutical companies have such a large influence over the FDA, the very department tasked with drug safety. Politicians and lobbyists just grease the wheels of this apparatus. Things may change in some few respects with stuff like this but soon after it's business as usual.

  7. This what things will look like as long as our politicians keep taking payouts from these major corporations and as long as these corporations have the money and power to hire private interest attorneys to lobby for them nothing will ever change just smoke and mirrors oh and not to mention alot of politicians have personal private investments ect. In all these companies making sure they will always be a priority over the American citizen idk how much more evidence we need lml but dam
