IMO to understand the bombing of Nordstream its important to look at it with a geopolitical lens. Europe was becoming deeply dependent on cheap Russian energy. With close economic ties (esp if they develop into dependencies) you get close ties generally. So after that state of affairs continued for say 5 to 10 years, Europeans were bound to ask; "whats the point of NATO? Why are we in NATO, Russia is not our enemy anymore". What does that mean for America after that idea takes hold? America loses the whole European sector of its empire is what it means. If you remember not long after Trump became President in 2016 he went to Europe and told them what a terrible idea Nordstream was and that the Europeans needed to abandon it. That's because from the time Nordstream was first proposed the Neocons immediately recognized what a threat to US Empire it was and that they needed to destroy it first chance they got. The Ukraine war (something that the US and NATO have been planning since 2014 when Ukraine lost Crimea and the port of Sevastopol) provided a great cover. But then not long after Russia invaded in Feb 2022 the Neocons realized that they needed to destroy Nordstram right away to ensure the European population would not pressure its leaders to make peace in Ukraine so that Nordstream could be turned on. They were the real motivating factors for destroying Nordstream IMO. But that's not to say that there were no other collateral benefits to destroying Nordstream, such as creating a new European market for American bottled gas. But the primary reason was to ensure that Russia and Europe didn't get so close that the Europeans would want out of NATO.
