Nobels ODR1 – The BEST Drive Pedal NOT in the Helix

I bought this Nobels ODR1 months ago, and haven’t really done much with it. It’s a bit of a legendary pedal that folks all over love, so I thought I should give it a try. Can we get one in the Helix please?

Oh – presets used “AndyTim” preset from yesterday.

A Year on, I feel it’s time to refresh again and continue with @five watt world style principles of keeping gear that is maybe going to inspire, get plenty of use, and not being selfish and holding onto gear that I don’t actually get much use out of that is just “nice” to have…..

I’ve decided to make it possible to grab both my Helix/HX Stomp bundles (the expression bundle with freeze presets has always been separate) together for £5 – https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=CCTNL7P2XSQDC – I will then email you a link to both bundles!

  1. I have the ODR- Mini on my board and am in love with it. I switch out some of the other drives sometimes but this one is always in chain.
(That just sounded like I own a ton of pedals. I don't actually. I don't enjoy testing different varieties of pedals. I find what works and play it into splinters.)
If the Nobles ODR doesn't fit your taste, it's perfectly fine. Tons of great choices of overdrive out there. (Well, actually, there are 5 or 6 different circuits that companies keep remaking.)

  2. John, thanks for this demo I've been eyeballing this pedal for about sux months and I'am headed to pick one up today it's just seems to be a studio guitarist most wanted pedal and after listen to your playing and different tone shaping I'am sold., so thanks for the great content and cool video's!!!

  3. The Klon (minotaur) is pretty damn close to mu Archer. Timmy players say the Helix version is very close. I just started using it and like the results . I’m not removing the Archer from my pedalboard. It seems to react to my amp tones well. The EP Boost is pretty good. I’ve not easily replicated my Zendrive though. Replacing my “The Dude” is not an option at this time. I’m not completely sold on the Fuzzface tones. I just haven’t used them live. I love the Helix “time base EFX” a lot and some of the amp modeling. John you do a stellar job with the Helix.

  4. I have and enjoy the Nobels and would like to see it added to the Helix, but the pedal I'd most like to see added to Helix is the Crowther Hotcake. That's my favorite dirt pedal of all time.

  5. I have a pretty long list of stuff I’d love to see added to the Helix, and this is at the top.

    Some of the others:
    – Orange Squeeze type compression
    – TC Chorus
    – Marshall Gov’ and Bluesbreaker type pedals
    – Yamaha Symphonic
    – Echorec style delay
    – Rockman X100 emulation
    – a Morley style wah
    – a Boss Blues Driver

I know I’m not the first to ask for any of these things… and it’s possible we may not see such things until a Helix 2…

  6. I like the sound of this pedal, and I’m really interested in trying out Wampler’s version, the Belle. Another pedal I really like, though maybe I won’t get much agreement on, is the MXR Custom Badass Modified OD. Silly name, I know, but it has a couple of cool features – a 100 kH knob that adds or cuts bass, and a “bump” button that boosts low mids – that make it pretty versatile and worth checking out, IMO. I’ve had it on my board for years and I’m finding that I’m using it more over time, not less.

  7. Yes, I'd like to see that Pedal added to the Line 6 Helix lineup. I first heard of it on the Tim Pierce Channel, and have been watching videos on it ever since. I agree, it has a very musical kind of Distortion and seems to do things other Pedals don't. It has a very distinctive and versatile range of tones.

  8. I will say the ODR-1 is an absolute must have pedal. There is nothing like it really on the market. I own a mini version. When you said you played it once in another video I was shocked. I will say if they did this on the HX Stomp I might sell all of my drive pedals. My drives are a ODR-1 Mini, Mini Tubescreamer, Mosky Mini Horse(Klon clone) & a Source Audio LA Lady for any other drive sound. There are just some sounds that Are must haves and this is one of them.

  9. Try the Browne Protein. It has the ODR1 on the right and a Blues Breaker on the left. This is a really great combination for people looking for an option for the typical Tube Screamer. Great video.

  10. Placed the ODR-1 in front of the Stomp way back. Gave me what I like to call "sophisticated grit". However, when looking to dig in a bit deeper, the Karma MTN-10 gets the nod.
    Nice one Keith 👇

  11. I tried an ODR-1 in a local shop, but I didn't get on with it. That was probably because I was using it with humbuckers instead of single coils. In the end, I coughed up the extra dosh for a Lightspeed and I couldn't be happier. The ODR-1 does sound better in the hands of someone like John, so you can take this all with a grain. I'm not a high gain guy, so the low to medium gain from the Lightspeed is perfect for me whether I'm playing single coils (if I want to fatten them up, I stack my klon clone in front), P90, Filtertrons, or humbuckers. There's my two cents anyway.

  12. Yes would love to see this in the HX… think the J Rockett version might be the GTO (Guthrie Trap Overdrive). Was on the lookout for an ODR1 type but a Lightspeed came up recently at a good price and always wanted to try that too…

  13. I bought the Wampler Belle which is a copy of the ODR-1 with a bass cut/boost and a switch to adjust the clipping to a more modern kind of sound/attack. It is hands down my favorite overdrive and I would welcome just having it built into to my HX Stomp so I can make my rig even simpler lol.
