  2. I hear that Humanity should do this or that, but most of Humanity lacks real organized influence against the minority that weilds power. Unless….. something can happen that can unify wider humanity in a collective pushback? While the regular working class through sheer numbers has vast power, it's like an army with no generals to direct it.
I think of the movie V for Vendetta, not so much about his campaign of violence, but how V seized the tools of media communication to get messages out to the whole public. I mean yeah, we have YouTube or Facebook, but being one voice amongst millions is hard to get wide attention. I wonder if in the strange technology landscape of today, something like that could ever happen?

  3. You have to wonder if Chomsky deliberately ignored the implications of Nasa/Sandia Labs 1982 Magma Energy Project research, in favour of Meadows 1974, The Limits to Growth. He would already have been 45 years old in 1974, when Meadows published The Limits to Growth – a theory he could adduce in support of his Marxist politics.

He would have been 53 years old when Nasa/Sandia Labs published the Magma Energy Project report, and 64 years old when Al Gore took office, and wrote 'An Inconvenient Truth' without mentioning the fact Earth is a big ball of molten rock. The supposition certainly lends an extra dimension to Chomsky's statements about deliberate campaigns to deny or downplay the urgency of the climate crisis.

While there's evidence to suggest American Presidents were briefed on the theory of climate change as early as the mid 1950's, to my mind – the climate and ecological threat was not very well understood back then, while the stark realities of energy security must have been a far more immediate concern. Radical left wing elements had far greater latitude, and indeed, did raise environmental concerns, albeit primarily as a critique of Western capitalism.

Were the environmental left's motives other that traducing Western capitalist society, one would have to suppose – Nasa/Sandia Labs 1982, Magma Energy Project would have been the most welcome news; relief from the existential terror of climate and ecological breakdown; freedom from guilt and fear the radical left instead, continued to amplify for the next 40 years – unto the present day without ever mentioning Magma Energy. Rather than seeking to solve climate change; instead demanding we have less, pay more, stop this and tax that – criticising capitalism, when they might have demanded we produce limitless clean energy from Magma to meet all our energy needs carbon free, plus desalinate, irrigate, recycle and capture carbon, and so internalise the externalities of capitalist economic production.

In much the same way you have to wonder why Just Stop Oil is not called Just Go Magma, you have to wonder if Chomsky deliberately ignored Nasa/Sandia Labs findings in service to his anti-Western, anti-capitalist politics; and if so – if this makes him more despicable than energy companies, who may also be accused of putting their interests before those of the planet, but do at least produce the world's most vital commodity! Energy!

  6. OPEN LETTER TO THE WHITE HOUSE,
DEAR PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN AND VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS,
    WITH ALL DUE RESPECT,
BOTH OF YOU HAVE REFERRED TO DONALD TRUMP AS A "FASCIST DICTATOR UNFIT FOR OFFICE"
SO WHY ARE YOU IGNORING THE FREEDOMS THAT THE UNITED STATES HAS STOOD AND FOUGHT FOR, FOR HUNDREDS OF YEARS BY INSTALLING A FASCIST DICTATOR TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

    THANKS ALOT!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. At 4:00, he uses different words to reference the same concept that I have explained to my wife several years ago. I told of differing evolutionary “trajectories”, the growing gap between our technological and social progress. The “evolutionary trajectory gap” is a huge threat to the survival of humankind. And now there are at least three existential threats which humankind is not now resolving: WMD (especially nukes), climate change, and artificial superintelligence. The problem is that superstructures (like geostrategic advantage and capitalism) create dynamics which are unavailing. Humans cannot stop because the entire systems are built on the assumption of perpetual continuation. (But what is interesting is that the billionaires, whose lives will continue in abundant advantage and opportunity even with a redirection of history, are continuing on a path to human extinction. I think all humans are oriented toward the convenient, the short-term, the expedient, and this includes the super-wealthy. Humans of all socioeconomic strata can and do dupe themselves.

  8. NO idea about this subject….. so called climate change is not caused by CO2, but is the unstoppable progression into a new Ice Age…
This is precipitated by petroleum oil pollution in the ocean micro layer…. leading to ocean warming and Arctic sea ice melt.
    There is no way out

  9. It is in the genetic makeup of humans to think only of THE SELF, so the Utopian idea of humanity will NEVER happen: it is , like all life on Earth and even in the Universe, like stars, destined to die.

  12. I maintain a grocery store lot in town. The company was accused of price gouging, yet the store is busier than ever. Articles have come out about microplastics in water bottles, yet people keep buying them. The owner of the business is a billionair oligarch, yet the ever growing homeless population keeps showing up on the property and pull garbage out of the bins. I find needles and pipes weekly. There's a flood of fast food packaging to sweep up every day. Every year the amount of garbage increases. The garbage bins are changed daily, but now they need to be changed multiple times a day. Its mostly bottles and burger wrappers.

My mental health gas tanked. It feels like nobody cares. Those with the positions and power to make changes arent intersted in doing so.

Im working on buying property in the country. Im not going to stick around as the city I live in becomes more of a dump. Those who are unwilling to change can drown in their own decisions. I wont even fight about my opinion anymore. Im out. I dont care what the rest of you do anymore. Im looking to sever myself from people as much as possible.

Im not saying these things to rile anyone up. This is my lived experience. Ya'll can do what you want. I'll ve working on a sustainable small community.

  13. Humans are the only species that understands evolution and that it leads to a stronger more adapted species. Yet we never think of evolving, we cling to the past because of our fear. Fear that is likely given to us by religion. Fascist dictatorships rise and fall, and they always fall, and they do the dumb stuff that has no connection to the future. Democracy could do better but it depends on electing honest people, and that never happens because voters are brainwashed morons. There is a huge brainwashing industry called the media and there is still the brainwash of religion. The poor serfs who were educated to be easily manipulated will never pull there heads out of that dark hole and view the light of truth. So, I am going to laugh, and mostly laugh at the crying baby-brained morons who did it to themselves. Some of us tried.

  15. I'm truly a born optimist but have to say recently it's getting harder.
Climate change will affect all of humanity, some in a more profound way like food shortage. Imagine the wheat belt in the US unable to give crops. With a malignant narcissist at the helm the response when people start to riot would be one of extremes no doubt.

AI is here to stay, there's no putting it back in the box now. If AI will save us or make us extinct is an open question, that the changes will be immense isn't.  The stock market could be the first "victim" when the only trade going on will be between AI agents and the whole idea of publicly traded companies fall. With it the World economy.

Despots all over the world see the instability and are trying to use it to their advantage. This in turn causes more instability. If the above doesn't get us WWIII could easily be sparked by one of the rouge nations with the capability, or even by the next US administration. Or by AI, at least Russia have autonomous nuclear torpedoes controlled by AI that can stay hidden under water for a year before slowly making it into a port and detonate.

Time to get digging on the nuke safe shelter..

  16. A few years ago, a somewhat well-known British author and journalist shared a conversation he had with a South American shaman whose tribe was about to be displaced by de-forestation. He asked the shaman, 'What is wrong with modern civilization?' The shaman replied, 'You have forgotten Spirit!'.
Chomsky's ideas presented here could have been applied when the banks collapsed in 1929.. But the capitalist class already had too much influence in government. People have forgotten there was a major change in the climate then as well, a drought that lasted over a decade. IMO, it's too late now. It may take the world 100 years to recover from the mess industrialization has created. A great collapse has already begun. This time, humans are the cause of their own destruction. Some humans are too greedy. Others are too easily swayed in the lies the greedy humans push at them by any means. The spirit of sharing and caring has been reduced and increasingly replaced with survival of, not the fittest, but the richest. Or so they believe.
I'm not as old as Chomsky, but getting there. The material body I live with is getting weaker. The mind is not what it once was. Still, the spirit that is the true essence of who I am is still here. Eventually, my spirit will leave this body and mind. While I'm still here, I try to keep one thing in mind: Every living being is part of ALL living beings.
