  1. Trading without being able to speak to someone has a long history. It's not hard to communicate "this for that".

    Heck, The Norse and the Innu engaged in trade without even meeting each other. It worked by one party leaving the things they had to offer in a cache, then when the other party came along they would take what they wanted and leave what they thought was a fair exchange. Both sides knew that it was in their interest to play fair, as cheating just once could ruin the whole thing.
