Phase beams aren't rubbish, if you have the right add on modules they cool down quick and can drain enemy shields quick plus can also (with the right module) give that energy from baddie shields to yours.
The Byte beat music reminds me of the old C64 SID tunes, and they were classic Drew so can't wait to see what you do with it
